Booya -

The casting number (5679142) is correct.  The 305 is the julian date (Tuesday, November 1, 1966) the housing was cast.  This steering box would be correct for your car if the build date of your car is after (within reason) November 1, 1966.  If you clean off the machined pad in your photo (it's between the 7 & 8 O'clock position in your photo) you might find some numbers stamped there that would indicate the date the steering box was assembled.  Check it.  This date too needs to be before your car's build date.

Basicaly julian dates cover the year without regard to months. Jan 1 is julian date 001. Dec 31 is julian date 365.

Hey booya. I assume you are rebuilding/restoring. I have some play in my manual gearbox and was wonder if your gearbox had some "play" in it and could you tell me where you got your rebuild kit from. If you are not rebuilding then do you know if there is some adjustment to tighten things up?

Thanks

Nate

ya i am restoring but i have yet to find a rebuild kit. as for the adjusting, in the photo, where you can see into the steering box, there is a cover over that with 3 bolts and a threaded rod with a slot and a nut. this rod adjust the gears into mesh with each other. and the nut locks it into place. if the rod is already threaded in all the way the gears are worn out and need replacing or repair.
