Title: 69 owners with "Smooth" steering wheels please check in
Post by: bertfam on April 27, 2008, 07:11:56 PM
In case you haven't been following the "PEBBLE-GRAIN" THREAD (http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=3759.0;all) because it doesn't apply to you, I've started one for you owners of 69 Camaro smooth steering wheels!

We now know the smooth wheel was used at least from 02B on, but now I need to know if it was used any earlier. If you have an original 69 Camaro with the smooth steering wheel, please post. (NOTE: The original "pebble-graining" wore off fairly quickly, so a VERY close inspection of the wheel may be required.) I'll need the following information:

1. Type of car (base, RS, SS, Z28, COPO, etc...)
2. VIN of the car
3. Build date on the Trim Tag (12A, 03B, 05D, etc...)
4. Interior code on the Trim Tag (712, 718, 722, etc...)
5. If the car has the "standard Interior", does it have the Z23 option

Thanks gents (and ladies)!

Ed, I have an early Oct 68 build Z. Do you need my info?? I alway thought it was smooth, but now I'm not sure what I have. It has had one of those vinyl? wheel covering on it for a long time, so I'll have to take it off partially  to look if need be. I do know that it is the original wheel.

Jimmy, yes, if you would remove the cover and see what you have, I'd appreciate it. Look close because the graining wore off fairly quickly and it might appear to be smooth. The best way to check is looking over the entire wheel. Not all areas will be as worn as others.

I was able to check my '69's interior over this weekend.  Although I am not the original owner I am almost positive that the interior is all original due to the age it is showing, and I have verified that the engine, trans, and rear end are all original.  It has the Z/28 option and Rally Sport also.  The steering wheel is definitely a plastic "smooth" one; I could find no trace of "pebbling" anywhere on it.  The build date is 01C.  The interior is 712 black standard.  It has a console with the wood grain and also wood grain on the lower left part of the dash where the light and wiper switches are and where the radio control dials are.  The steering wheel has wood grain with a rs emblem in chrome.  It has no wood grain where the ashtray and glove box doors are.  It does have a grab handle above the dash and chrome trim on the accellerator, brake, and clutch pedals.  Hope this info helps.

I caught a typo.  The interior is 711, not 712; it is a standard black interior.  Sorry.

I finally took time to check a column from a 69 I bought as a parts car back in 84. It was very complete and original but rusted to bad to fix. Even today I wouldn't want to try it. It is a Rally Green/white vinyl top SS 350 with floor shift turbo 350, with 727 interior and no Z23. S/N# is 124379N550686 and was added to  the data base many years ago. It has a non x code cowl tag with a 11D build date. It has a standard steering column with the "ss" emblem and no trim. Column date is 324. Now for the word you are all waiting to hear. It is a "smooth" wheel. I was not expecting to find this as I was going to use it for my 02D L78, which had a small diameter chrome spoke cushion grip wheel when I bought it. My L78 has a 711 interior with Z23. The "ss" wheel has cracks on the back side where the spokes meet the rim. Is that worth fixing?
