Title: 67 camaro what do i have?
Post by: qwertyme77 on March 22, 2008, 07:08:58 PM
I just found this great site last night, and while I thought I knew alot about first gen Camaros, this has shown me how much I don't know. So here goes.

I have a 67 coupe that I bought just before it was scrapped nineteen years ago. It had no drive line at all, and the entire interior was missing. But I bought it as a shell to put my parts from a 68 into. At the time I bought it I didn't know what it was but what I've found out so far intrigued me. So here are the facts:

Vin; 124377n172561

trim tag;

General motors corporation
01B                             R
ST   67-12637 NOR 72740  BODY
TR  732-Z       F-F             PAINT
WL  2LGSR    3BD
4P   5Y
    BODY BY FISHER

I've decoded the tag so I know it might be a ss350 or a 327 4bbl ( It still bad the ROUND radius bar bolted to a plate bolted to the body) I have no build sheet, nor any other clues that i can find other than the front had drum brakes.

SO HERE'S THE QUESTION: WHAT IS THE CHANCE THAT THIS WAS ACTUALLY AN EARLY Z-28 ?????

Front drum brakes would indicate not a Z/28.

is there any way to verify it's a ss350 and not a hipo 327??

Just by judging build date and info on CRG, an 01B car with a radius rod and drum brakes, my guess is SS350. Other people who know more will chime in on this I am sure. Posting some pics of what you have and of the firewall may yield more clues.

The trim tag indicates a 4 speed car and the speedo cable location can be a clue as to an SS or L30/M20.

The 4P on the vin plate does mean ss350. Congrats!

Actually based on the 01B date 4P could mean SS350 or L30 M20.

wish it had the speedo cable, but that was gone too.

any other clues to look for to make a final determination?   I've already looked above the headliner, and the tank was gone when i got the car.

Assuming there is no other way to determine if it is an ss350, would it be wrong to badge it that way and say that is is an actual ss350?? opinions??

Is it original paint?  SS should have a bumble bee stripe on the nose, stripe was I believe optional on other cars, so no stripe original paint would indicate L30 M20, but stripe would not prove anything. SS should have an SS hood, 327 should not.

Don't know where you are, but there are experts on this site. Post some photos, including the trim tag.

YES - that would be wrong.

You're looking for a hole in the firewall, kinda above where your right foot sits.
Post a pic of the firewall.

If Radius Rod was factory installed, isn't the car too early to be an L30/M20 with it?

No, it could be a L30/M20. The change happened about then.

ok, all these pics werer taken shortly after i bought the car nineteen years ago. back then i was using it as a driver. i plan on undoing the "mickey mouse" bodywork that i did back then. as you can see, there was not much to the car when i got it. btw, the rear axle you see is a 10 bolt that came out of my 68 that i junked.

after i painted the firewal.
l does this show the hole??

if you notice, the car was originally no a/c, but since my 68 did have a/c......

and now the trim tag.  if you check the photos, you can see that i removed the tag when i repainted the firewall. i guess i should not have done that, but at least i was very careful to not enlarge the hole size in the tag or firewall.

oh, i almost forgot the lovely shot of my floorboards. needless to say this work will be redone.

there is a white dot near the steering column on the firewall, i don't think it was dust on the negative, but maybe light coming through a hole??????

As you can tell, this car was in really sad shape when i got it, but i have spent nineteen years slowly collecting parts to restore this thing. Originally i put all my 68 parts in the car including the dash pad and tailights. I have nos quarters, outer wheelhouses, left fender, cowl vent panel, upper valence and front fender skirts. I'm still looking for an nos right fender. I also have repro inner wheel houses, trunk floor and floor pans (L & R) .  I also found a center console and guages, rear defog and courtesy lights.

I plan on leaving the a/c in the car, and i have a complete working ralley sport headlight assembly, as well as the tailight assemblies with lower backup lights. I would never consider claiming that the extra options were anything but owner installed, but i plan on doing it with as many original or nos parts as i can.

Oh, and for safety, i installed power front disc brakes from a 72 nova.

I know that since the original drive train is long gone, that this car will never command the value of other more original cars, but restoring this car has become an obsession now.

My brother is trying to talk me into buying one of the new repro complete bodies and putting my vin on it, but i really don't like that idea. He says that the state will just treat the new body as a very large replacement panel. what's your opinion on that ??

any word after looking at the pics to see if it is an ss350????

It's an SS350. The hole for the speedo is over the throttle lever and the other factory speedo hole is plugged.

That A/C unit is not original to the car and should not be there. The firewall is non-A/C.

Good luck.

i know it is a non-a/c car, and i would never say that it came from the factory that way, but at my age i like the comfort of a/c so i plan on keeping it that way. i used a part of the firewall from the 68 camaro that i junked 19 years ago as a template to modify the fire wall, but it is completely reversible as i did not weld anything in.

thanx for the confirmation of it being an ss350 !! it will never be a show car, but then again i want to drive it so any serious shows are out of the question. just some local car cruises when it's done.

Rick, glad you can see the hole over throttle lever! Too many shadows for me. I was gonna ask for a close-up. :)

don't cut the quarters off the car were the door stricker are, the quarters have the early TELEPHONE style quarters I dont think they are repo-ing them.

Me too and I can see the plug on the first speedo hole.  But this was an auto?  So where would the speedo come out on a non-SS car with auto?

if you are refering to the last photo showing a wide brake pedal and no clutch, that is because when i got the car it had absolutely NO drive train. they had even removed the entire brake/clutch pedal assembly. i needed a car to drive (remember nineteen years ago) so i put my entire drive train from my 68 327/auto car in.

Can you post a picture of the hidden VIN. on the top cowl of your 67 SS? it should be easily accessible right now. I have a 67 exactly like yours, an 02B built car but at Van Nuys plant. I would like to note any differences between the two cars/plants. Thanks.

Jeff.

those pics were taken many years ago, and the car is assembled for now. however it would not be too much trouble for me to take off the cowl panel and shoot it for you. but you will have to wait until next week as i'm leaving for florida in a few days for my grandson's first birthday.

Thanks Paul, but no, please don't dissasemble your car. Theese guys at CRG forum have since set me straight. Remember (newbie) thats me. I now can see your plugged speedo hole and the other open hole up high in center of firewall. Thanks alot though for offering.
I have an obsession now just starting too. You can view it under (general discussion) board. L30/M20 find. That speedo cable hole that your car has was initially pierced/located on my car by Fisher bod factory, but not opened up enough to be used.
Does your car have a floor stiffener plate under the rear seat passenger side like mine does?

Thanks again, Jeff

WOW, what a nicely optioned car !! If you are able to return it to original color and options, it will be beautiful.

Thanks for saving it... ;D
