Title: 69 X77
Post by: ccargo on March 03, 2008, 09:57:56 PM
I bought an 05C X77 720 72-72 car this week. It has no console, guages, tac, or center fuel gauge. A real plain jane except its really ORANGE and has the rosewood dash. It does have front and rear spoilers but not the D80 on the cowl tag? I just wanted to be sure it was factory spoiler equiped by the third week of May? It does have a cowl hood but I've read it's unlikely its original via the low production totals so my plans are to switch to the flat hood. With the lack of RPO's this car has I think it would be fitting to keep it simple since I wont be competeing for attention with the X33 RS cars anyhow :) But I think it will look sweet next to my Z11.

Body 321319
VIN 6443XX

05C is too early for D80.

Factory ducted hood cars have additional wiring and firewall piercing. Easy to tell but also easy to add.

I had 2 twins to your car many years ago; only options on one were gauges, power steering and am radio; the other also had JL8.

I think there is a post on this in the forum. On the factory rear Spoiler cars one of the torsion bars was thicker than the other. I can't remember if it's top or bottom

AS OF APRIL FIRST, SPOILERS WERE MANDATORY AND THE PROCE OF THE Z-28 OPTION WENT FROM 473.95 TO 506.60 TO INCLUDE THE PRICE OF THE SPOILERS. AS FAR AS THE DUCTED HOOD, THERE IS A HOLE IN THE FIREWALL ANOVE THE FUSE BOX FOR THE HARNESS TO RUN THROUGH. I THINK IT IS 3/4THS OF AN INCH IN DIAMETER. SEARCH CRG FOR A THREAD ON IT. IT WAS JUST DISCUSSED NOT TOO LONG AGO.

Thanks for the info, I'll check the trunk rods and firewall piercings for the signs. I'll get the tag posted for authenticity when I get it home. Why did they continue to put the D80 on the tags of some cars after April when it was included in the package?

Dealer added rear spoilers can sometimes be identified by raising the trunk lid and looling at the underside of the trunk lid.  Often you can see where the factory Camaro emblem on the trunk lid was removed prior to the dealer installing the rear spoiler.  Often the original mounting holes for the Camaro emblem (although filled) can still be made out.

Also, do a search on this site.  There was a previous thread about the correct mounting hardware used by the factory to install the rear spoiler.  Check if the spoiler is mounted with the correct hardware from the factory.

All factory spoiler cars have two sets of emblem mounting holes on the trunklid, the originals and the set that was drilled with the same tooling that drilled the spoiler mounting holes.  At most the original holes got a peice of tape placed over them before the spoiler was mounted.

Mark,

Thanks for the clarification.   Only one set of monting holes on my trunk lid with some kind of filler in them and painted over.  Visible from the underside of the trunk lid.  Since only one set of holes, dealer added item.

Thanks again for the information.

I bought this car with the understanding that it was a NOM although it has a 302 DZ block with assembly code V0602DZ in it. The previous owner bought the car in 1984 and at the time didn't really give much consideration to the authenticity of the motor and has never looked for the partial. The conditions where the car has been stored for the last 15 years wouldn't allow me to try and locate a partial at the rough casting so I just assumed the block not to be original because the assembly date of 0602 is later than the 05C build date by a week or two. I'm not missing anything am I ? Are their any circumstances I'm missing that this assembly could still fit the build period? The trans is original and the axel is dated inside 60 days. Not that it matters as I said it was bought at NOM money.

An 05C Z/28 would not have been built with a June 2 engine.

That would not bother me one bit; enjoy the car!!

I've got it half way home. Its at my buddies shop in Ohio now and he took a couple fuzzy photos. I can't complain to him he went out through that 20" snow storm to pick it up for me!  The 0602 might be an 0502? I'll have to get a good digital of it and check the rough casting.

The interior is pretty nice and I might be able to save it as original. The steering wheel is in the trunk....not a rosewood though :)

Is this a good enough digital shot to make a call on this tag? The assembly code has been highlighted with black marker and the pattern on the pad is from poor digital exposure but its all I have right now.

Real bad news... that block has been decked...

Post by: ccargo on March 13, 2008, 06:48:53 PM
Well the good news is I only paid 14K for the car and the guts of the block are correct :) I'll get some good light and a better digital camera and take another run at it. I shouldnt have used that shot. The camera added details it doesn't really have. If its the font and spacing thats at issue I'm SOL. Any data base samples that rule this one out?
Title: Re: 69 X77

Yep it is the spacing and etc... plus the machining marks on the block... but for 14k you are more than ok!

Very cool car. Orange on orange is a knockout :). Bill, is that your old one?

Post by: william on March 14, 2008, 02:23:09 AM
Nope. My 1st orange car was N684692. Do not know VIN of the JL-8 car.

There were several other orange/orange Z/28s in the area.

I would give $14k for that car all day long, especially with that Pace Car interior  ;).

If the tag is good, I think you scored even with the engine issue.  It looks OK to me, Kurt what do you think?

The tag is good, the block stamping is bad. But I really think you did good at 14K. I would love to own that car.
I like the all orange combo. I think it is desirable.

Turn off the caps (its considered yelling)

I think what William meant is that 05C was too early for D80 to show on the tag.

After looking at the photos of this car... how original is it? the stripes look "right" on the back... Has the car been painted? The TT looks as though it is oringal finish especially with the paint misted on it...
Give us some more info... us guys who love original paint cars are always on the look out... even if the original paint is bad, I still like to see the way the factory did it...

I still have yet to get it home as it's still at my buddies shop. He's been taking some photos for me but they leave much to be desired. He pulled the engine out so we could inspect it better. This was one of those deals where we ran into a guy last June at a swap meet and got to talking about his friend who had an old Z28 in a building boarded shut for 15 or 20 years....we've all heard it before. I continued to follow up on letting me take a look and finally hooked up. I knew going in the Z was priced at 14K and wasn't expecting much. My friend took the trip to see the car with me on the cell. When he gets there he was more than a little excited at what he found. This is my first Z28 although I'm far from a virgin with first generation camaros. I'd appreciate any and all thoughts on what I have and how it should go back together. We have sorted out and inventoried what was on the car as well as what came with it. Of course this block is a big question for me. Do I keep it as a restoration block or does the car deserve a correctly dated DZ? It's an 010 block dated E139 and has this V0602DZ restamp? I have no idea whay they wouldn't have stamped it better for an 05C build car? Maybe it was bought like this?

It had headers on it but also came with the original smog bpump and exhaust manifolds.

Interior has cleaned up well but the drivers seat has a repairable split at the piping otherwise nice! I do have the right wheel too.

The exterior has been painted in spots for certain. I just don't know how much is original yet? It needs paint!

roof and other spots have been spot primed.

Car looks fairly un-molested... I would not do too much to it until I got some more opinions on it... the engine bay looks nice... wrong Mastercylinder. Got the smog with it... WOW...
I would say that the car has the original stripes for sure... mostly orignal paint probably.. and cowl hood to boot!!!

The carpet is original and is good enough if I can get the musty smell out of it? The pans underneath have alot of overspray.

I think thats about it for now. The cowl hood had pins installed  :-[  It does have a pierced hole and grommet above the fuse block on the firewall so I dont know if I'll be changing to a flat hood or not?  I hope I didn't use up too much space  :-\
Title: Re: 69 X77

I took the carpet outside on a sunny day, washed it, and let it dry in the sun.
That car is nice... I would love to have that as a starting point...  great color combo... you should be able to find an engine close to your build date. Looks to be a factory Cowl Induction car, which in itself is pretty rare.
TAKE LOTS OF PICS!!!! and go slowly...

... wrong Mastercylinder.

I noticed that too.....because my Pace Car has the same one. :-\

Neat car - what did you find in the internals of your engine?  All 302 goodies or something else?  Original heads do you think?
Title: Re: 69 X77

I like it even more after seeing pics. Looks like a decent car.
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: ccargo on March 20, 2008, 09:04:00 PM
It does appear to have all the 302 internals and does have the 1178 crank. We just truned it over and did some measurements and it seems like it's floating with the right lift etc. The engine had aluminum angle plug heads on it when found. It has 041 March dated heads that came with it along with a 381717 finned balancer. The only things I've found missing entirely are the master and correct Hurst shifter. I'm glad you guys like it so far. I was somewhat scared of an X77 with no tac, gauges, or console but I do like the colors and overall integrity of whats there to work from. Also it has a 8263701 C 23 water pump and I think the original radiator.

Heads and balancer are wrong, same with waterpump.

Does it have a UH rad tag?
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: ccargo on March 21, 2008, 05:03:49 PM
I'm going to get a few more photos this weekend including the radiator tag and codes. It's been tough since I'm getting the data second hand. So the 041 heads are not going to work either? They are 2.02 and dated right. I'll check the balancer #'s that are on the crank now to see what it is. Maybe this loose one is something different as I also picked up a bunch of hi-po blocks, cranks, rods, heads etc. in this deal. Another question I have is what the correct Hurst shifter will be for non console? Will it still be the off set version?
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: Jonesy on March 21, 2008, 06:42:24 PM
Unless 041 heads have been found on DZ engines. Most have 186 heads.
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: firstgenaddict on March 21, 2008, 09:30:30 PM
The shifters come up on ebay all the time... around 400 or so. 186's are easy to find as well.
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: KurtS on March 23, 2008, 05:03:18 AM
Pat,
There was only one shifter - didn't vary console or non-console.
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: ccargo on March 25, 2008, 04:15:14 PM
Thanks for all the feedback guys! I've rounded up the 186's and a shifter setup for the car. Now I have to decide if the block is going to stay or if the car deserves a DZ implant. The cast # and date are good on this block.  Are you guys sure this is a restamp before I swap it out? Kurt are there any same day assemblies in the data base?
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: firstgenaddict on March 25, 2008, 07:13:57 PM
The block is a restamp... however it could have been decked when it was rebuilt... and then someon restamped the numbers in it.
Title: Re: 69 X77
Post by: jl8dale on March 25, 2008, 07:44:37 PM
I would look carefully for the oil filter vin to see if this is the original block. If it isn't, I personally wouldn't waste my money getting a real DZ block that would be essentially the same and still be NOM to this car.
Great find though for the money!
Title: Re: 69 X77

I would keep that block and use it. It makes no difference.

OK, but make it fast and painless ;) Here's the full VIN so it can be logged for posterity N644317. I'm not lettin some some future owner resurrect an original block N644317. It works fine in my stable of miss fit toys.....:)
