Start here and click on #8; 1969 Cowl Tag - X Codes:

http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml

X44 would indicate non SS, non Z28, and without either style trim group (Z21) or RS package (Z22).  Note the footnote reference to COPO.

and here for engines info:

http://www.camaros.org/engine.shtml#CamaroEngines

Non SS, non Z28 engines could have been:
L26     230ci/140HP  L6 1BC - non-SS
L22     250ci/155HP  L6 1BC - non-SS
LF7     327ci/210HP  V8 2BC - non-SS, prior to 1 Jan 1969
L14     307ci/200HP  V8 2BC - non-SS, after 1 Jan 1969
LM1    350ci/255HP  V8 4BC - non-SS, prior to 1 Jan 1969
L65     350ci/250HP  V8 2BC - non-SS, after 1 Jan 1969

What is you VIN #?  VIN will tell 6 cyl. vs. 8 cyl. and it will also establish if your car was built before or after 1 Jan 69, which will help narrow down V8 possibilities.  Also what ir the body build date code on the cowl tag?

Norwalk is a virus. Norwood is where Camaro's were built :)
