I bought a 69z in 2000. the color original color is daytona yellow with a black vinle top so the tag says.
the tag also says it was built in oct of 1968 there for it has no x code on the cowl tag. But here is the thing this car has the original m22 tranny AKA"ROCK CRUSHER" with the vin of the car on the side of the case. I t also has the orignal 12bolt rear axel in it with 4 multi leaf springs. but no 302 motor so i searched from person to person who owned the car to try find the motor or hopefully the original owner. The guy that owned it back in 1976 said he had drove in high school and said he pulled the 302 cause he spun the rod berring. But because the car has no x coed and also no tach or console i dont know for sure if it is a z28 or not. This guy also had pictures of the car in the late 70s with the z28 emblems on it. A few other things about this car is it has disc brakes and the hangers are still there for the chambered exhaust and it has the Rs package with the orignal yellow paint on the back of the hidden headlight covers. With all of that junk attached to the side of the wiper motor that workes the headlight covers.
Is there anything else i can do to find out what this car is . If it is a z why dont it have a tach or no power steering. Is this car a special order car that someone might have ordered with m22? I have no clue this thing is driving me crazy. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!! I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.

Factory M22s were only installed in HP models such as L78, L89, L72 and Z28.

everything else for the z besides the power disc brakes was optional. you could get it with no tach, no guages, and power steering was actually rare for a z-28. if you dont have jerry's definitive 69 z-28 t. look for the brace on the left rear chassis rail for dual exhaust, as all z's had dual exhaust.
good luck

SO WOULD TE M22 BE PROOF ENOUGH TO SAFELY SAY IT IS A TRUE Z?
-
Not with all the restamps out there. You really should have Jerry certify it for you. Short of that, post a picture of the VIN stamping on the transmission and we can tell you more.

How do you know its an M22???
-
Also check for a single 3/8" dia. fuel line which would indicate a Holley carb (high perf.) 2 fuel lines 3/8" with 5/16" no Z28.
Good Luck

I WAS REPLACEING THE CLUTCH AND I FOUND THAT THE INPUT SHAFT HAD A CRACK IN IT SO ORDERD A NEW SHAFT FOR A M21
THAT IS WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS. WHEN I GOT THE M21 INPUT SHAFT I TRIED TO INSTALL AND IT WOULD NOT FIT. I CALLED THE TECH WHERE I BOUGHT THE SHAFT AND WAS EXPLANING THAT THE GEARS ON THE SHAFT WERE SLANTED MORE THAN MY OLD SHAFT. THEN EMEADETLY HE SAID "YOU HAVE A M22 I WILL SEND THE RIGHT PART" AND I INSTALLED THE NEW SHAFT WHEN IT CAME IN AND IT HAS WORKED GREAT SINCE. AND IT WINES ALOT I HAVE ALWAYS HEARD THAT IS NORMALY HOW THE M22S SOUND.

Is the P9P09 or P9R09 on the trans?
Trans stamp looks original.
What's the axle code? http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#RearAxleNumbers
-
P9P09 is the stamp. and the axlecodes are so badly rusted i need to wire brush them to find out
-
P9P09 is what is stamped. the axle codes are so badly rusted i cant read them until i wire brush them

P9P09 is what is stamped.

I'm assuming this stamp (P9P09) is stamped on your transmission...
P = Muncie 4-speed transmission
9 = 1969 model year
P = September
09 = day of the month
So what you have is a 1969 Muncie 4-speed transmission assembled on September 9, 1968. :)

on the cowl tag it has a 10b is that black vinyl top or black stripes ? and why does this tranny not have a C stamped beside the P9P09?
-
i added some more pics of car steering arm and possibly dual exhast brackets?
-
10 B is 2nd week in October, the car color code 76 B is Daytona Yellow with a black vinyl top. C next to the transmission date code is M22. If you click on the CRG header in the top right of the forum page, you will find great information on the car. ;)

My 10B Z/28 does not have letter suffix on trans either; Mine is P9P11 within 2 days of this one; Suffix was not added until about 3rd week of Oct 68, I believe. Looks correct to me.

Kurt, Jerry, anyone....opinions on this ?
My 69 X66 05A car has the born/w factory M22 vin# stammped trans.
There are no doc's on the car. So would it be safe to say there should be no dispute to my car being a factory built L78 ?
Thanks Mike

When Jerry came to my house to verify my L78 69 INDY, one of the major proofs that he used was the original born-with M-22......your M-22 trans(assuming original) proofs 100% the car was a solid lifter car...ie... Z28,L78, COPO...I'm no expert, but I thought Id chime in because of the similar situation...correct me if I am wrong...

Yes, based on it in fact being original to the car.
-

I guess after 9 yrs. :o I should get some info to Kurt for the DB.
