Only one vendor makes the molded pad and it's not very good.  As a matter of fact, it's pretty poor.  Too thin and the clips pop out for starters.  #$@%$&*&%^*!!!  The flat molded areas are not in the true postition.  When used on a 1968 Camaro with 396 engine, the smog pulley digs into the hood pad.........nice.  I tell people to buy the old pad that is not molded but looks more correct.  I actually called the vendor who makes these a couple of years ago and told them about the problems and they didn't seem interested in correcting the issues.

Is it the same for the molded cowl hood insulation?

Same vendor makes both.

I purchased a 98% 68 396 in 1980 and the smog pump already dug into the insulation, otherwise it still fits perfect.

Mabey a dumb question but what is a 98% 68 396?  Do you mean it has the original padding?

I don't know how correct in appearance they are to the originals, but I would take JMs word on it.

The supplied clips will pop out of the hood if you look at them wrong.  I was able to obtain some GM clips, and they worked much better.

Also, unless you can find a local vendor that has them in stock, they have to be truck freight shipped, which can be pricey.

I have a 69Z with an original cowl induction hood.  My original hood insulation was not in good shape, or at least did not look good relative to the rest of the restored car.  I purchased the current molded insulation to at least replace what I had.

I have had a few of the clips pop off.  I ordered another set of spare "original style" clips and modified the stem to put more of a sharp edge on the push-in area of the clip.  I used a utility knife and file to carve and file the stem to get the sharp edges.  This allows the clip to get a better bite in the holes of the hood.  Since I have done this, I have not lost another clip.

I agree! I purchased a Molded pad in 2001, & you pay a premium and  incur high shipping costs due to construction(No other option). When installed on my 68 w/born with 396 parts, the pad rubs the original air cleaner lid. This scratches the chrome. As a concerned customer and understanding the 'Your the only one with a problem' attitude of mfr's & vendors I felt like doing a little research on these pads. I had long trashed the original and installed the $35 resto pads that were the only choice in the 1980's. What I found as a reference was the Old issue of Camaro Enthusiast that had a series of great 1967 Camaro reference (Read ORIGINAL) photos. On page 5 they have a shot of an original Hood insulation pad. It was clear and you could make out details and depressions and spacial relationships of the contours & indentations.
The reproduction missed the air-cleaner recess by about 1/2" on the radius. Keeping in mind the Big block offset to the pass side. I assume the SB cars do not have this issue?,,,,,Therfore the rubbing occurs.
I prepared an bunch of documentation and sent the feedback to (Manufacture) R.E.M. Auto in PA.
Nothing but silence,,,,
Well my Fix is to Run a $25 Tiawann Lid and let her rip (I drvie mine & it does have its fair share of 1980's resto errors)and swap to the orig lid at a show.

No problems at all with there cowl ind hood version on my pace car,,,,he, he

Not a bash here,,,just a little feedback.

Forgot all about the air cleaner issue and scratching the chrome.  That did happen to Ken Lucas' 68 L78.  That is another issue that I forgot to mention in my earlier post.  The Jap lid sloves the problem though as stated above.

I will say this......there is plenty of room for improvement on the molded pads but it appears that the vendor does not want to deal with it......or all of the problems would have been corrected by now.

BillG,
Yes.  A almost all original car. It had the wrong rims, tires, radio, (with a vibrosonic unit!) shifter knob, mufflers.
also the air cleaner contacts the insulation. I tried to compare other BB Camaros but never could find a car still with the insulation. I have reached the conclusion that most owners removed them when the smog pump pully dug into the pad.                                                               VT

The reproduction molded pad (REM) has some issues, but is far better than the alternative. All the manufacturer needs to do is make a few minor modifications and it would be much better. In the mean time I trim a little here and there and get it to fit. Regarding the clips, I simply use a file on each clip and increase the locking lip. I was tired of finding them on the garage floor and a little filing did the trick. I also place a thin plastic on the core support braces because they get scratched from the abrasive insulation as well.

I put pieces of plastic strips that I cut off to shove inside the clips.  Haven't lost one yet.

I believe there is a nice one made now, that is molded. I saw it for sale for about $80 at Steves Camaros, but it was to nice for my car. If someone gets one and is parting with an original please let me know, I can help pay for your new one if there is a way I can get a good original.

You can call Steves and ask him who makes it. 650 873 1890

OK, I had to call Steve today. The manufacture of the newer moulded style is REM. I have not seen a comparison bergen a original vs. REM, but they look tons better than the previous reproduction.
