Title: Engine decode
Post by: Jesper on January 27, 2008, 04:13:51 PM
Hi everyone,

can anybody help me decode my engine:

Cast number 3914678
Date code C58
Serial number 185414180 V 0307HP

On both heads: 549 and a "6"

The engine is probably a 302, 327 or 350. I´ve been told, that the engine should be a 327 from a 68´Corvette with 275 HP. Can anyone confirm this, and in case yes, how can this be documentated?

Thanks in advance, and with best regards

NCRS references say 3914678 is the correct casting number for a 1968 Corvette 327, and the C 5 8 casting date says it was cast at the Saginaw Foundry on March 5, 1968; the partial VIN, 18S414180, says it was originally installed in a 1968 Corvette built on March 20th, and the 300hp engine was assembled at Flint V-8 on March 7th.

The original cylinder heads were 3917291, and their casting date will appear directly below the casting number, as shown in the photo below.
