Title: SHOULD I BUY THIS CAR? HELP!
Post by: thecraiger on January 23, 2008, 07:18:08 PM
I have the opportunity to purchase the following and would like to hear your opinion on the rarity and or value if I choose to restore it.
1967 Camaro SS 350
Butternut yellow with black vinyl top
Power windows
Power brakes
A/C
Tilt steering
Fold down rear seat

It does not have the correct Engine, Transmission or rear end
Has a 350 Engine/ Trans out of a 73 Chevy van and a 10 bolt rear end

I need to pay $10,300 for the car. It is a very solid car but needs floorboards and trunk pan

The tag number states the equipment is factory

sounds like a lot of money for a car with the wrong drivetrain AND needs floors and a trunk! it is very close to my butternut yellow 67. it is 12D production.

I apologize for my ignorance.
What do you mean by "it is very close to my butternut yellow 67. it is 12D production"
do you think the A/C and such ad much?

I agree, the price is a bit high for non numbers matching and some major metal work that needs to be done on floors and trunk. Do you have the vin numbers which are located on the inside of the drivers door by the front hinges. Not trying to be smart, not sure if you knew where to look. These numbers will at least tell you if the car is a true v8 or 6 cylinder. 12D means 12 month 4th week of built, you stated this car you are looking at is a 12C

You have some typos in your tag info.  Here's my best guesses at the incorrect info.  (body number, 2W 2C)

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
4 = 8-cylinder engine
37 = coupe body
7 = 1967 model year
N = Norwood, OH assembly plant

Decode for body number: 054401

12C = Built the Third week of December.
67-12437 = Standard Interior Coupe.
NOR = Built in Norwood Ohio.
760 = Standard Black Bucket Seats.
Z = (A50) Strato Bucket Seats.
Y-2 = Lower Color is Butternut Yellow and the Vinyl Top Color is Black.
E = Interior paint is Black
Options:
1E = (A01) Tinted All Glass
1X = (A31) Power Windows
1L = (A67) Fold-down rear seat
2E = (C60) Air Conditioner
2M = (M35) Powerglide Transmission
2G = (D55) Console front compartment
2S = (U73) Antenna Manual right rear
2R = (U80) Speaker rear
4P = (L48) SS 350
5B = (V31 & V32) Front and Rear Large Bumper Guards
5Y = (A39) Belts All Deluxe

Yes, the car could be worth the mid-20s (There are plenty of slapped together clones that are getting those prices.), but you would probably have more into it.  If you are going to truly restore it, you're also looking at the cost of matching #s drivetain.  Even if you don't go that far, how about painting costs, repair of the A/C if it does not work, etc.?  Those options do add value to the car, but it's hard to put a price on it without a better idea of the overall state of the car.  Post some pictures.

We're not trying to discourage you, but the days of restoring a Camaro "cheap" are long gone.  But I think you ought to do it, just because it's butternut yellow!  Let us know what you decide...

I've responded to your PM.  But now that I see you've bought it, let me say that the effort and the car can be priceless!

Now, if you are going to keep it, keep it butternut and join the "crazy ones".  If not, paint it red just before you seel it...
