Title: 4.56 posi 12 bolt (BW code)
Post by: Mad Dog on January 16, 2006, 08:25:15 PM
I just yanked the 12 bolt out from under my Nova. I know that it is not stock for my car....so I looked up the code and here is what I came up with

BW 1227 G2
-----E----

The best I can decipher this is a 4.56 rear end built on 12 27 of 1967 or 1968 for a 68 or 69 camaro or nova. I know the E means eaton posi.

Now for the questions...

How rare was a 4.56 gear?
How much is this worth compared to the run of the mill 12 bolts on Ebay that go for around $100?
I will be selling it, I just want to know what I have before it hits ebay.

Thanks for your reply

Rare maybe but desirbale only for drag racing.

Any car with a 4.56 would be a bad street vehicle unless you are drag racing al the time.

I would think it woud be harder to sell then a 4.10, 3.73 or higer ratio,  those would be better on the street.

Just put it up for sale without a reserve and see what happens.

The axle actually has a set of richmond 3.73 gears in it now.....the boys over on the supercar registry told me to come over here and ask this board about the rarity of the housing.

Like I posted over at the Yenko board, the factory 4.56 rear is pretty rare and very desirable by factory pure stock racers and other racers as well as the trailer queens that don't get on the highway.  True, the 4.56 gears are no good on the highway, but most stock restored musclecars don't get on the interstate too often.

There you go, you got a buyer that is going to pay you very big bucks for it.  Let us know if it was really worth more...
What good is the 4.56 ratio in a trailer queen?

I guess it all depends on what you have? Although most camaros were just sporty grocery getters with highway gears others were special ordered for drag racing with high performance drivetrain components. My car was ordered for use at a little 1/8th mile drag strip in St. Louis thats now known as Gateway International Raceway. Its 4.56 axel along with the M22 rock crusher and L78 396/375hp engine was a suggested setup by a local drag racer who had some regional success. It might not withstand thousands of miles of steady highway driving but for short bursts up to 100mph it's still a little exciting to drive  :o

I like the 4.56 for a street driven Z/28. Those cars pull out much easier with that ratio than a 3.73. I recommend a 4.56 with a little taller tire for a Z in my opinion. NO trailer queens here.  Sam
