Title: 69 388 block casting date vs build date
Post by: JKZ27 on November 14, 2007, 04:17:28 AM
I recently found a complete 350 300 hp engine in a junked 69 full size station wagon, original to the car. The interesting thing I found is the 388 block was cast in September of 1968 but the engine was assembled in February of 1969. Seems like a long time difference to me. Unfortunately, the block is cracked so I'm wondering if its worth documenting before I throw it away.

I'd like a picture of the engine pad, if possible. :)

Thanks!

I would like one too. :)

Would it be possible to get a picture of the trim tag on the firewall before it is scrapped?

Unfortunately, I left the car with its trim tag at the junk yard. I only took the complete engine. I could go back and see if it is still there, I'm always looking for reasons to go to the junk yard.
I'll try to get some pics of the engine pad out asap. Thanks for the interest.

John,

Include me in the photos if possible.  Might be able to use some of this data in the new 4th edition Camaro book that I'm working on now.  Mail to z28camaroman@juno.com.

Thanks,

Jerry, CHP

I can believe the time span between casting and assembly. My Grandfather always said things did not follow an inventory program back in the day with parts arriving and being used in sequence of arrival. I should have listened to him more when he was around.

The numbers appear as: Casting date I 28 8, Assembly T02I2HN, VIN 192065800. Heads and intake both cast B 4 9.

That casting date (September 28th) is pretty early for a February-built high-volume engine; if you look closer, you'll probably find that it's L 28 8, December 28th.
