Wonder if you guys can straighten me out... seen a few distributor caps and bought a couple.
Can anyone explain the differences between the D308 and D309? Some caps say patent pending and others have a patent and some are brown with copper terminals.
I was wondering which may be correct for my 69 SS 350 and what the others would have been correct for... pics from ebay.
Thanks for helping.

OK thanks Paul!
Looks like I have two D308R that would be correct with my 69 SS
And I have a 309R that is only good for the Transistor Ignition?
I can't imagine that there would be too much demand for the Brown cap then?

Just paint it gloss black - no one will ever know. :)

That explains the over-spray on the intake manifolds of all your cars Jeff! ;D

Well that ALSO explains why I thought there may have been a third cap... I actually have a Black Cap with copper terminals. Looked at it closely and noted it had same patent as the brown cap... close up I could tell that someone had painted it shiny black. Jeff you must get around. ;)

Hey - I resemble that remark. ;)
Actually there were black caps with Copper contacts - the plastic was a bit heaver also.

If you have a brown cap with copper terminals, '67 L-88 Corvette guys like them. :)

The brown D309 is correct for ZL-1s and 69 L88. Both have T.I. ignition. I have brown ones and a black D309 as well, same part number. I dont know why the one is black. T.I. guys say the brown is a special dielectric plastic. The brown ones go for $175-$200. :o

Thanks Guys....... The Brown one I've got is new unused .... so one day I'll have to start selling all the wrong stuff I collect on ebay. I think I got it for like $28 including shipping... it did not have a box.

"Confusion say:" Wear the right cap when it is "R"aining patents and pending!
So there are four period correct caps?
Black cap with silver contacts "Patent Pending" R
Brown with copper and with the patent #2769047
Black with silver and "Patent #2769047 also ?" as illustrated here and the link.
And the Black "painted ;)" caps with copper terminals. ( I have one and could never tell it was painted... also has the #2769047 patent)
WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN......... STAY TUNED FOR THE "COIL BRACKET QUIZ"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
