Title: Axle play?
Post by: sdkar on October 24, 2007, 05:23:57 PM
Not sure if this is something new or just something I have never noticed before.  The rear axles of my 69 Camaro have some play when I move the axle in and out.  It is not much but I am wondering if it is contributing to a recent "rattle" noise I am getting while driving.  What is the amount, if any, that the axles should move in and out?  Is there anything I should do to take up this play?

A tiny bit is normal. There is a c clip holding the axle in. Maybe 1/8-3/16" ?

Steve -

The specification for the axle shaft end play is .002" - .020"  You can check it with a dial indicator.   :)

Got it measured and the tolerances are good.  Found the rattle while I was at it.  One of my exhaust pipes is hitting the underneath support plate that is on all convertibles.

Thanks for the info.
