What are the ways to tell a 68 is an SS or not, BBC or SBC, besides disc brakes up front, since the trim tag says nothing about option codes (4P or X-55,22 etc.)

So I guess this makes 68's the easiest "clone" of the first gens ?!?!

Yes, in a way. But remember in 1968 all 350cid and 396cid engines leaving the factory in Camaros were Super Sports! So if the car you're looking at has it's original engine with the factory stamped engine assembly code and partial vin on the engine pad it's a SS. Good luck.

Thanks Paul, that was the kind of info I was looking for!! Oh, these codes (L35, L48, M20 or any other), where can these codes be found (buildsheet, invoice,??). I'm getting back into the hobby (so me and my son can build something together and have a car worth something) after selling my 72 SS Chevelle 11 years ago for 8000, body off rest and all. Isn't that crazy. Back when you could take someones word for what you were buying. I think alot of people are trying to ca$h in on all this Barret-Jackson craze. It's almost put the common man out of it......

And --beyond Paul's observation--the hardest to prove originality without a POP or other original documentation! We 68 owners have to do it the hard way... So go ahead and get copies of the books, etc. suggested here:

Welcome back to the hobby! It is great that you are doing this with your son!
And do get a 68! ;D ;) ;D

To add my 2 cents, the most obvious SS things to look for are a 12-bolt, multileaf springs, hood with the bubble and "air intakes", and of course the emblems and SS gas cap. The early SS350 cars had the finned intakes, whereas the later '68s has the '69-type intakes. And interestingly enough, you could get a Powerglide in a base SS350 car. If you write Chevrolet they'll send you a free booklet listing all the options and codes for a '68. Combined with a White Book and some research you can figure out just about any option except for the really obscure stuff. Good luck, and keep the '68s rolling!

When documenting "any" first generation camaro its the "sum of the whole" available benchmarks that are commonly used to identify a particular model's RPO factory build. The cowl tag alone as documentation is a factor in a minority of total production when you consider that the 67's 4P is not conclusive and the 68 cowl tag is void of RPO data along with a significant portion of early Norwood and all of Van Nuys 69 production. I don't feel the 68 model year is any more difficult to verify or subject to fraud than any other production year if a comprehensive evaluation is applied. In fact I'll take a 68's protecto plate with its computer punched VIN number applied to the booklet cover against any other production years cowl tag or paper documentation as solid documentation any day of the week :)

We early trim tag 69er's don't have it any easier!

Good point Pat! I haven't heard of anybody trying to fake the punched vin on the '68 warranty book.

These codes can be found on both the dealer invoice and the build sheet. I've attached two photos below. One is an original dealer invoice for a 1968 Z/28 and the other is an original build sheet for a 1970 LS5 Chevelle. You can see the option codes on both of these pieces of documentation.

No first gen Camaro ever came with a buildsheet.
Broadcast sheets, but not buildsheets.
