Title: Concept Camaros Does anyone have any info on........
Post by: 67ModTop on August 07, 2007, 04:09:22 PM
I was wondering if there is any info on any possible surviving 1967 Concept cars. These one off cars are a piece of History, it would be quite interesting if anyone could post any pictures of the cars today.
I would like to confirm that there was two different Cut Away Cars, one 6 pop the othe an SS 350.
There are plenty of pictures of the SS 350 car but none of the 6 pop.

The Cam Am Pace Car is still alive, but is the Waikiki Concept?

 Did the Caribe survive?

Is the Fisher Wagon still around?

Does anyone know if any Camaros still exist that wore parts from the AMT Catalog?

 Any true "Mod" cars left?

I'm a little surprised that no one has any interest in these historical Camaros ???

Either way, Here is a then and now on the only 67 Concept that I am aware is truly alive!

This car made Chevrolet's Show Circuit back in 1967, at one point, it was dispaplyed with a wild 67 RS fitted C10 OR C20 Truck. Towards the end of 1967, it was tabbed for the CanAm Pace Car duties.
It will pop up in photos every once in the while, however, the trim tag has never been shared as far as I'm aware.

 Then.

Cool photos!  The back end of the "Cherokee" in your first photo looks like the '68 Corvette with it's "built-in" spoiler and split rear bumper.  Thanks for sharing BBP!

What is the story on the Cam Camaro. I see it's been brought out to shows over the last year but have not seen a write up on the cars history such as where has it been all these years, and what condition was it found in?

there were prototype Camaros that made it in some 67 magazines that had non production features, such as custom vinyl tops, that 1st Z with prototype rear spoiler that is different then the later production spoiler and others

here is a picture of the hawaiian Camaro

Here is the only known shot of the interior of the Waikiki Camaro.  This Proposal option, although not popular at the time, would be a hit in a Camaro Museum!!!

There was a "hand made" 67 camaro on ebay several years ago.  I think i saved pictures of the vin and trim tags and some of the areas where hand made was written is something like that.  I will look for them tomorrow.  I believe the car was assembled 1st week of august or july of 66.

I have a lot of pictures of the Cherokee along with most of it's history from the 1967 Can Am race at Road America to today. We know all the owners and have talked to all of them. The guy that owns the car now is a good friend of mine. I've asked around on this site before (last year) but there was never much response about it. Thats the strange thing not many people want to talk about it or maybe they just don't know much about it. Where did you find that Can AM flier? If you own it are you willing to sell it? I see you must have been at the SCR-10. I was there with my wife and the owner of the Cherokee.

Mike

This is how the car was found about two years ago.

Holy Cow!!!

 That's great to hear!

I've collected 1967 Camaro memorabilia for a number of years. Since I'm into the 1967 Camaro Pace Cars, it was natural for me to try to find out anything and everything about the cars that were used as Pace Cars, as well as the 1967 Pace Car Program.
This car has always intrigued me because of it's uniqueness as to it's history. This car, as far as I know, was a ONE OFF, one of a kind SHOW CAR.
Then, only to add to it's mystique, it was selected as the CanAm Pace Car!

I have interviewed somewhere close to 20 different Chevrolet employees over a three and a half year run to uncover everything thing I can on the 1967 Pace Cars.
The search has been the best blast ever!!! Fascinating, unreported facts and stories have helped to piece together what I feel is pretty much an untold story of the 1967 Camaro Pace Cars.

I was hoping that someone would step up to this post, if I'm right, I believe I know what some of it's original history may be.
This interests me because of what should of happened to this car and what obviously didn't!!!!! Plus!!... The fact that after tracking down some PROVING GROUND personnel, maybe there is hope for some of these other cars that shouldn't be still alive!

I believe I might have another CanAm flyer but if I don't I should be able to get one for you.

Do you or does your friend have any vintage Photos or 8mm???

Have you seen the Cherokee in her Bright Yellow Coat???

I didn't make it to the Super Car Show, however, if I knew that THE CHEROKEE  was going to go, I may have tried to make the time.

Believe me!

If I had all the money in the world, this rig would be near the top of of my list!

I'm not really interested in buying it but if it's for sale, I believe I know someone that will make the deal.

My next car is still yet another 67 Festival car.

Hi Chris
I'm not to sure if he would sell it just yet. We have been telling him to hold on to it for a little longer. I think the more the car gets out the better the offers to buy will be. I knew they(Chris and Terry) were going to ask you to buy your car. You should have seen them all weekend, like two little boys looking for that girl. They just wanted to see your car after I told them you were going to be there. They love them Zs

I'm not a huge fan of modified/special Camaros, but the Cherokee looks pretty nice.  Nice color, wheels, etc.  You suppose they had to use hood hinge springs for that honkin rear spoiler though?  ;D  That Hawaiian Camaro, man I don't know about that.  Cool in the day maybe, and unique yes, but that dude just doesn't work for me.  Check out the wood grain moldings, visible screws holding them on!  I hope the girl in the grass skirt doesn't get it hung on one of those screws!  And, what's up with that gold/yellow door jamb area?  Not slamming on the car, it's cool, just crazy.

 Classic!!!

These cars were also considered Proposal Cars... needless to say..all the points you have pointed out must not have excited too many people back then too! The fact that someone considered pitching this version of a Camaro Convertible really brings home the fact that it was the 1960's!!!
 Too me, one is enough!!!

Interesting that you ask about cut-away concept Camaro. At the Spring Carlisle swap meet this year (2007), I bought some parts from a vendor who told me has exactly what you are talking about. I walked with him to his pick-up, where he showed me phtographs. The car was for shows only, and had the following features:

- it was mounted on a turntable
- it had two front ends, a six cylinder and a V8
- through a series of electric motors and pumps, you could literally switch from the 6 cylinder to the V8. The front end of the car would lift off, and then you could rotate the other front end in place and lower it
- I do not believe the engines were real, but did have electric motors that spun the fans , etc.

There was a name for this concept vehicle, but I can't remember it. As I recall there were only a few made. It was a first gen Camaro, but I don't remember what year.

Anyone else heard or seen this vehicle? It must be very, very valuable.

If this vendor has one, and it's not the one that Rick's had from Austrailia, it seems to be a new find.

The Show and Display office/Department was responsible for all the cut away models.

The 69 model was very different than the 67 and 68 due to that switch out front end.
The 67 was your standard cut away.
Some of the people that I've talked to feel that the 68 Cut Away was a modified 67.

It's been reported...or at least discussed, that there may have been a 6 pop cut away in 1967 as well as this SS 350 one.
Has anyone else heard this?

I just came across 10 pics of a 69 cut-away Camaro..these pics are from 1991 if I recall...this is not Ricks car from Australia...apparently my scanner sucks...I'll try to figure out how to make the pics clearer...Some are more detailed...with the motor all apart...the trunk lift mechanism...the car was super clean back then with only one minor ding if I recall...it seemed to be mostly all there, although missing the display and other nose....it definitely did not need restoring like Rick's car...just needed freshened up...

...this is probably the car that the vendor had pics of at Carlisle....

Can anyone help post my pics...I'm not sure if they are viewable to anyone else...I'll post or email the others if anyone is interested....When i found out about this car, I thought for sure it was the only one ever built...Until Rick's car showed up....If i recall, I believe the odometer shows 4 miles....The car is loaded...early wood wheel..houndstooth...rear defog...tach and guages...I wonder if these cars were complete and then pulled off the line to convert?? or special-built by hand??

  thanks

I believe they were production cars that were modified. I don't recall how many, but there was more than one display car. The Australian one ended up there at the end of its tour and was scrapped there.

Here is a link to a interesting thread over on the pace car site. There is a pretty big interest in the 1967 Camaros with a number of members so when a recent new member posted a shot of his car...it turned out to be a MOD TOP.
For obvious visual reasons, this program didn't really stand the test of time, but seeing one today is still exciting and unique!

I found 3 1967 magazines with an article on the Z/28 intro but none had the picture I was thinking of

I notice in these pictures the Z had a picture frame type front plate with Z/28 on it and in one picture you can see where it must have fallen apart as it looks like the back plate is there with 2 clamp strips.

also you can see the prototype rear spoiler that has a flat back unlike the curve back of the production spoiler

I'm here. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. You wanted a picture of the trim tag, right?
I just got off the phone with Terry and he was wondering if you happen to find another one of the can-am fliers?
Is that a scan of the flier that you posted or is that a picture of it? Does the flier look better in person then the picture you posted? What we want to know is if you can make out what it had for rims. Also what it said on the door. We are willing to pay for the flier if you or anyone may have an extra one. I lost your e-mail so if you could e-mail me at Mr12771@aol.com and let me know what pictures you want to see.

Thanks Mike

I'm looking for vintage pictures of the car. I can see the real car anytime. The owner (Terry) is a good friend of mine. That picture in the flier that Bigblockpace posted on the first page is a vintage picture we don't have, but would like to. We are still trying to gather more information on the car.
