Title: 1967 z/28 smog pump
Post by: Jonesy on July 09, 2007, 01:53:42 AM
Jerry's Definative 67-68 z/28 book lists the correct smog pump as 5696104 for the 67 z/28.

Well I have looked high and low and actually came across a NOS in the box 6104 pump. At least the outside of the box had "5696104 AIR PUMP ASSY" on it.

The UPS LAbel was dated May 29, 1973
(http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z279/jones93_photos/1967%20z28/67smog5.jpg?t=1183945184)

Inside the box was an AIR pump and the back side of the pump had the casting number of 5696132, which I see cast in all the 67 smog pumps.
It looks like a Julian date of 188? and a D5 on the back side.
This pump has the straight tubes coming out the back

It also has a build date code stamped on it: 2511A

Front side has what looks like a 67 in the middle of a wagon wheel and 5696211.

This doesnt appear to be a pump made in 67, does it?
My question would be - Is this the correct smog pump for a 67 z/28?

I know there are 2 versions of smog pumps for 67 chevrolets. One with straight tubes and one with an angled tube. Both say 5696132 on the back.
So judging by the one I have in the NOS box, the 5696104 pump was just the part number and not the casting number, right?

Here is a pic of the angled tube pump

Which is the right pump and what does the NOS one decode to for date.

Mike,  smog pumps did not get the relief valve on top until '68.  The one that I have here for you is the correct casting.

That is a replacement pump dated 025th day of 1971.
It is the correct over the counter replacement part for the 67 passenger cars -

The number on the back of the pump is "generic"  for the case.
Those were configured many different ways for different applications
Most passenger cars had the 3 outlets - Corvettes only had 2 hose ports.

...I have a fairly early build (11B) '67 Camaro (327/275hp) with the correctly dated smog pump, ...that looks just like the last two photos (with the 45 degree bent tube), ...and has the relief valve. (I even located another pump dated 3 days from the original, ...and it too is identical to the last too photos, ...angled tube and valve...).

Thanks for the input guys. Mark, so the relief valve didnt show up until 68? I think the 67 pump has a flat spot were the relief valve is on the 68.
I would definately want your pump. I think I have at least 4 of them and they all have the valves!

To the best of my knowledge Mike.  I'll ship the pump with the clutch fan in another 2 weeks or so when I get up to my brother-in-law's place to get it.  Sure you don't want that nicely dated 266?  ;D

Here are some pictures of the pump that came on my 67. It looks like your NOS pump. It is from a 210 hp 327 and has 3 straight tubes on the back. A muffler snaps over the valve on the pump housing. It's from an 11E car. The angled tube pumps were necessary on the L30 and L48 engines to clear the large air cleaners. I hope this helps.

It is possible the Z/28 or higher perf pumps were different, I guess. I have only seen the style you posted above and my pictures on 67, so I assumed. Anyone got a pic of a 67 z/28 pump?

Mark, let me know what happens.

According to the 1967 AIM (UPC-K19/A5):

5696104 PUMP ASM-PROD & RPO Z28
5696468 RPO L30 & L48

I would interpret this to say the base 327 and the Z28 used the same smog pump.
