Title: best spark plug for a 68 z
Post by: fireZ on June 01, 2007, 08:11:57 PM
Anyone have a favorite plug to use in a stock 302 motor.  AC43s seem to foul up terrible even with the carb lean.

AC44s are not made anymore, the easy substitute is Champion J12YC.  Same plug.  This is what we use.

Mine is driven normally around town and on the highway (not raced) with Jerry's distributor setup and 72/76 jetting, and I run AC R45S plugs (also run them in my small-block '67 Corvette), and I have no fouling issues at all (did have some fouling with 44's, and 43's are WAY too cold for normal street use).

45s will work for cruising the streets.  Only problem I found with them is in hot weather during the summer if you climb on the rpms a little, there is a good chance that the engine might ping w/36 degrees of total advance (93 octane).  They definately will not foul out as easially as the 44s.  Wanna keep the 44s clean, take 'er up to 7000 rpm once in a while...........now you're talking!

There is no better sounding car than a 302 z ringing out at  7000RPM. I remember visiting my Grandpa at a local GM dealership and seeing these 302 cars coming in and out for service and test drives. No better rush for  a young kid.

I discovered the Champion J12YC several years back while checking cross referencing charts. I tired 'em and like 'em in my 69 Z. I always have a couple of sets ready to go. Seem to be easy to find as well.
