Title: I.D. code (paint rings) on driveshaft
Post by: mrdetails on May 21, 2007, 04:03:53 PM
Does anyone know what the colors were for different driveshaft applications? I have a 12 bolt with turbo 400.
Thank you:
Sam

I wanted to post pictures of the stripes on my driveshaft that is out of an early 1969 z28 (october 1968 build).
Muncie close ratio transmission. The shaft is offset, it is 50 7/8 in length (from end to end). It is 46 7/8 from
tube end to tube end. The numbers on one end of the tube are 3790024 and their is the chevrolet symbol
cast into one end with the numbers 404-1 next to it. The stripe is yellow and I cannot see any other stripes
towards either ends, but I will look again.

If anyone can decode those numbers please let me know.

Here is the orig drive shaft in a 70 Chevelle with Turbo 400 and 396/350hp

I think there are different markings for different transmissions. I dont think a manual car has the same as an auto car.

My 67 z/28 has an M21 and 4.88 factory rear and here is the driveshaft paint:

Does anybody know if the big block shaft for M20 has a different casting number?

In 69, there were 3 driveshafts used:
- manual (SB & BB) & powerglide
- TH350
- TH400

I can't speak quite as definitely about 67/8 shafts, but they appear to be the same except that BB manual had a different shaft than SB manual.

Kurt:  Could you elaborate on the specific differences or point us to a section of the site that addresses my question

What I do know I wrote above. Beyond that.....not much. :)
The lengths are different and I believe the yoke offsets are different on some shafts.
