Title: License Plate Light Assembly - 1968 Camaro Base Model Coupe
Post by: gwp4 on February 28, 2024, 03:55:19 AM
Hello First Gen Camaro Experts:

I have a base model standard coupe 327/210 hp 1968 Camaro and am looking for a factory correct license plate light assembly for concourse judging.  The Legends Judging Manual for 1967/1968 Camaros notes that the "license plate housing is gold cad/zinc plated and the license plate light wire is black." Also, "the 1967/1968 license plate light bracket is visibly narrower at the mounting poits than the 1969 and service replacement brackets" and "the original lens is also different than service replacements with a noticeable tab on one corner.  Lens is marked GUIDE 3 SAE L64."  I've heard that some first gen Camaros sometimes have a brown license plate light wire instead of a black one.  Would that be for 1969 Camaros?  Also, if anyone has a survivor correct license plate light assembly I'd really appreciate posting a few photos for reference purposes.  FYI, the 68 Camaro FAIM UPC 12 C4 page 172 has the part number as GM 911242.  Many thanks in advance.  gwp4

I was inspired by Chicks 68.
Before
&
After.

Disassembled Factory removed from my Bumper, Degrease, Cleaned, Evapo-rusted, light glass bead, Impossible to fix pits in metal,  Lens-Screws to (Plating) clear Zinc, Housing to (Plating) Zinc Dichromate, Clean gasket, Clean & Polish lens, Clean Bumper bracket Grommet, Mounting-Screws Manganese phosphating, Polish center contact, Test with New Bulb and 12vdc source, Black Wire, Plastic connector & Packard Series 56 female terminal replacement optional.

I find these housing at Swap meets for around $5.00  plenty out there.

Notice it is the Correct Narrow  67/68 version with locating tab.

Hope this is helpful.

There are at least two different orientations of the socket location and the small bent locating tab on one end of the license lamp assembly.  See attached photo.  The lamp assembly on the left is the correct 911242 for 1967-68 Camaros because the black socket wire goes through the center rear bumper bracket hole on the passenger side.  Plus, the locating tab is on the passenger side.  The lamp assembly on the right is incorrect.  Notice the socket location changes to the driver side and the small bent locating tab is also on the driver's side?

The correct orientation should be noted before attempting to buy one of these from a seller on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, etc.
