Title: 68 Driver Side Firewall Ground Strap Hole
Post by: vetteskip on March 25, 2023, 12:24:12 PM
1968 Z28, driver side valve cover ground strap hole. I have a pieced hole existing on the passenger side firewall, but not the driver side - not sure if I'm looking at this correctly. The car does currently have a radio. Any thoughts?

Is your Z a NOR or LOS?  My 68 12D LOS car also does not have the piercing but was an original AM front antenna car.  But my 03D L78 NOR car was U63/U73 and it has the ground strap.

That is for a 6 cylinder application. See pictures.

Try again.  U63 calls for it as well.  AIM attached along with 68 03D NOR U63/U73.

Do I get 1/2 credit? And by the way, Mr. Preservation 👍👍👍, that’s the first time I can recall a dual purpose firewall hole.
Added the all important firewall hole piercing page.

The car is a Norwood car. I've seen a few different pictures of straps installed, most similar to the pic above (cook_dw). My thought was that they may have forgot to install the driver side strap originally on this car (?). If that's the case, I prefer to not open up a hole putting a new strap in place.

If the car was originally equipped with a radio, the ground strap would have been there. However, after looking at the Skips pictures, it appears there’s some work of some sort that’s been done to that area. Looks like some filler where the oil line comes through, and perhaps the screw is just broken off in the hole.

Jim’s car and my 12D LOS car has the same hole just below the mounting surface.

Thanks for the replies and thoughts! After seeing some of the pics above, I do have a screw hole down lower from the dimple area (as noted by INDY & COOK) and that is where I will install the ground strap. The dimpled area where the manual says to mount, and where some of the guys posted pics of the screw installed, never has the ground strap screw installed on my car (just a very small, not even 1/8" hole is present after cleaning it down - not sure if that was from the dimple or someone had something installed there once). Thanks again.
