Picked up a factory style shifter on Friday...don't know for sure what it goes to...besides Patent numbers it has 0230811M stamped ont he body. It doesn't look right for a camrao ...I can get pictures just forgot to do so before positng.
Any ideas

looks like early 70s Firebird. Pull out the stick and check the numbers
-
the numbers on the stick? I had no idea that it had numbers down in the tower...I'll look at it.
-
I had a '73 Z28 once that had its' original shifter. That pic sure looks like it but I'm not 100% certain.
-
You may not have had the original shifter in your 73 Camaro.
From what I have read, Camaro only used the OEM round stick Hurst in 69,70,71
-
It was definitely the original shifter. I was second owner, bought the car from my brother who was the original owner. I know for a fact it was round, but for the life of me I can't remember if it said Hurst on the stick or not. If that's not it exactly, I think you're right in saying it's a 2nd gen. Are you going to use it or sell it?
-
I've confirmed it's 2nd gen-ness...I dug into one of my boxes to pull out the shifter for my '70 Z/28 (haven't looked at it for over a year) and it is identical...will pull the handle to get a number,,maybe that will help resolve the shifter shape thing...Don't know what I am going to do with it yet.
BTW - anyone know what shape teh tower and shift lever are supposed to be for a 68-72 Chevelle?
-
I have collected and researched Hurst shifters over the last 20 years and have pictures that I marked with the applications
In my opinion ,
The one in the picture is not the same as 1970 Camaro Hurst
The 73 Camaro used a ITM shifter that is a copy of a Hurst shifter and has a chrome round stick but is not Hurst stamped
SS Chevelle 68-72 OEM used a Muncie shifter

I'll pull the numbers off both the shifters that I have and believe to be good for early 2nd gen camaros...perhaps that will help with a positive ID...What makes you think that the stick above is not for early 2nd gen? It is definitely not he ITM box...I've seent hose and ITM is prominenty displayed on the side.
I know that Chevelles use Muncie shifters but still need to know what the configuration looks like (bends in tower and stick) I am assuming that Muncie, Hurst or another would have to be bent roughly the same to work wiht teh Muncie tranny and the body pan.

the shape does not look like 70-71 Camaro stick.
It looks more like the Firebird stick
they have different stick numbers

Agree -- '70/'71 Camaro stick (and Firebirds WITHOUT consoles) had the bend further down the stick. Shape does look like 2nd gen Firebird with console.

I'll look at mine tomorrow. I have one that looks like that and e-mailed a pic to a guy that rebuilds OEM Hursts. He said mine was out of a 75 Firebird or Transam?
-
My body has a 3138 on it and the stick is 7244. 70-78 Firebird.
-
So pulled the stick out of the one in the picture above...no numbers stamped on teh stick..should I be looking some where else?
-
is it rusty on the flat press in tab? Some times the numbers are hard to see or were lightly stamped but should be there
