Title: Need Help With 1967 Console Gauge Harness
Post by: Vettester on April 26, 2007, 08:19:20 PM
Hi,  I'm restoring a 1967 Camaro coupe that originally came with a tach and gauges. The original carpet had been replaced.  My question is about the console harness routing.  I realize that the oil line goes through the grommet in the middle of the firewall and routes under the interior firewall pad.  The console harness obviously does not.  If the carpet is supposed to be tucked under the interior firewall pad, what is the correct way to join the console harness and the under dash harness and keep them covered by the carpet?  I find the assembly manual to be somewhat vague about this.  Does anybody have pictures of an original carpet console car? Thanks for the help!

I'll have a look in the AIM. There is a supplimentary wiring harness that exits at the firewall and enters the front of the console. Since it is hidden under the console I assume it can come up anywhere near the firewall end of the carpet.

My factory harness is an original and just hangs down from between the dash and heater box.

Vettster my harness clips to the console mount ahead of the shifter hole, before that it is run under the carpet up the middle of the trans tunnel. can you get me a pic of the grommet that the oil line runs thru the firewall? my car is missing that grommet. I will try to get a pic if the harness in the car. Ron

My car still has its original 40 year old carpet. The carpet is split in the area in front of the console. The edges of the split have a vinyl edge trim stitched on. The console gauge wires tuck into the split and under the carpet.

Mine is set up the same as Steve's (Farm Boy) except my car is a '68, which makes it's original carpet only 39 years old.   :D

Guys,  Thanks so much for the pictures and answers.  I'll get out there tomorrow and take a picture of that firewall grommet.  I guess the days of getting carpet with vinyl edging are over.  It seems that there are two types of original carpet.  One with the split and one without.  Thanks again!

Here is a pic of that oil line grommet fo Ron 69RSZ.  It has a slit cut in it so you can pull it apart and fit the oil line in.  It is a pretty pliable type os rubber.  Thanks again for the carpet pictures!  Vettester
