Title: 1967 SS Camaro tires
Post by: Vince on July 16, 2022, 09:41:10 PM
I am thinking it is time to replace the tires that were on my '67 SS when I bought it as they are 14 years old.  They are 215/70R/14 with a white stripe, Firestone brand.  From what I read on the 1967 Camaro basic info on this site and other places the tires that came on my car from the factory would have been D/70/14 bias ply red stripe with white stripe optional at no cost.  Does the D mean a 195 width?   I want to replace my tires with a 215/70R/14 tire as I like the way they look, they fit my car fine, and I definitely want a radial.  I think 1969 was the first year Camaros came with a white lettered tire, is that correct?  I'm not about to pay $300 or more per tire to get reproduction red stripe radials.  My car isn't entered for judging anywhere.  I don't particularly like black wall tires on first gen Camaros, so I have to decide on white lettered tires or white stripe tires.  Any suggestions appreciated.

I bought Cooper Cobra GT tires for my 1979 Trans Am and I've been happy with them.

If you liked what is on there, go with it. Maybe Google some pictures to see what it would look like on your car. I kinda like the reds.

If it were me, I'd go with one of these options:
1)  Redline tires. You can go with the BFG radial redlines ... which are available in metric sizes, look just like tread pattern of BFG Radial T/A (only redline instead of RWL).  You can go with old school bias ply Firestone D70-14 or F70-14 redlines tires.  You can go with the new radial Firestone F70-14 (FR70-14) that are radial tires but look just like the tread pattern of the old bias plies.  Not available in D70.  These are all in the $250 - $330 per tire range, unfortunately.

2)  Go with the tried and true BFG Radial T/A in RWL.  It's been the go-to radial tires for about 40 years now.  Not especially  unique, but they always look good and sort of period-correct.  I think these will be in the $175 ballpark.

3)  Go with something even cheaper.  I think there are some Uniroyals, too, that some people use and is a sort of classic.

And, I'll throw this in.  For years, Mickey Thompson Indy Profile tires were sort of a cool, performance bias ply tire with classic RWL look.  Those went OOP a decade ago (or more).  However, I did see that MT has a radial tire out there.  I don't know what sizes it's offered in, though.  I have zero information about it, other than it exists in some capacity:

I would concur with FR-7014 Red line Bias like radials from Coker the Firestone Super-sports verion.
Best of both worlds; Radial performance and redline and nice center retro tread.

If you can swing it, Figure out When Coker is at a Meet near you and save on shipping by meeting them there as a pre order situation.

That is what I did to save $$ on shipping.

I just bought the FR70-14 Redlines and they're sitting in my garage (unmounted).  I bought from JEGS because they had a $100 off coupon, plus free shipping.    That made them a tad under $300/tire.  Still, an absolute punch to my gut, but they'll look good.  I'm replacing BFG Radial T/A RWL 215/70R14 that were put on the car in ~1991.  Plenty of tread left!  But, I think they have the elasticity, plasticity, and grip of granite at this point.

When I get them mounted, I'll take a before and after pic and post them here ... probably in the next couple of weeks.  Then you (OP) can see if the redline premium is worth it to you.

Thanks guys for all your ideas.  Right now I'm learning toward Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II's in a 215-70R-14.  These come with a white stripe, and my local tire dealer has them for $120.26 each.  I definitely want a radial as I prefer their handling over a bias ply.   Firestone no longer makes the tires now on my Camaro.

Another point to Jim’s comment is Coker in the past also shipped free if purchased at car event or they have done in past at Carlisle events. 67L48 did well with his purchase.....

My wheels/tires are at the shop today.  I'll post the after shots hopefully tomorrow (8/6) after I get them installed tonight.  Here are the before (215/70R14) and during shots:

Beautiful car.  I often wish mine had disc brakes, but I do like the mag style wheel covers mine has as they don't seem to be very common.

^^ Every F body should have Disc's^^
Stopping, It what for breakfast.

Driving these days on interstates and state HWY often demand it, lots of kits and access to cores at swap meets.

Mine doesn't have disc brakes & I have the contraband, never-actually-used "Chevrolet Motor Division" dog dishes (my center caps don't say "Disc Brakes").  I just can't stand any of the wheel covers from 1967.  Mine wears rally wheels from a 69 Chevelle, I think.

Anyway, here are the after pics and a couple of wheel closeups:

OMG That Looks Fabolous - Good Job Sir!
The Contrast is sweet (Redline to B.Y.)

Those new red lines look great.  I am guessing your rally wheels are 14x7.  Did you have any problems getting them to fit or any rubbing issues?

Now I just have to convince myself that it is alright to spend $328 per tire plus taxes and shipping for redlines instead of $120 per tire plus taxes and no shipping cost for white lines.

I don't know much more about the process then what is shown in the video, but maybe this is an option?

[...] Now I just have to convince myself that it is alright to spend $328 per tire plus taxes and shipping for redlines [...]
As I mentioned before, JEGS has $100 off coupon and free shipping.  So, it's $303 per tire, plus taxes, and free shipping.  It's still a massive punch to the face, but you get to skip the knee to the gut when you're keeled over from that punch.

My wheels are 14x6.  Three are from a 69 Chevelle (K 19 10 YW) and the fourth is from a 68 Chevelle (K18 5 7 XB) -- they were on the car when I bought it in 1989, so I have no idea where they came from or why they're mismatched (maybe a tire shop screw up and there's someone else out there with the mirror set to mine). I haven't driven the car with the new tires, so I can't comment on anything related to driveability.
