Title: Engine Oil Preferences
Post by: 57s67 on May 02, 2022, 05:26:24 PM
My 67 has a mild 350 with a flat tappet cam.  I have been using the Gibbs brand oil for the first couple of oil changes.  Break in with the their break in oil then running the HR oil thereafter.  Pretty expensive, especially as I like to change yearly.  I prefer and oil that I do not have to add for ZDDP.  Any suggestions?

I use the Valvoline VR1 10w30. It is high in ZDDP. I also use ONLY Napa or Wix & only their 1st line filters....Joe

Agree -   NAPA Gold oil filters are made by WIX.

I too use Valvoline VR1 10-30 and a Napa or Wix filter in my '67 Camaro's L48 350.

I too use Valvoline VR1 20-50 and a Napa or Wix filter in my 1969 Camaro's L72 427. Some times you can find a great price on Amazon on Valavoline VR1 oils and Wix's filters.

Spectro based out of CT where I live. 1800 ppm of zinc and phosphorus (ZDDP).

I use old Pennzoil. I have several cases of it.
Why not use Rotella, it has the higher levels.

Switched from Gibbs  to VR-1 20-50.   Both good.  No reason for the change....just felt like it, and VR-1 is easier to find where I live.

IIRC Rotella reduced their zinc and phosphorus content.

Penn Grade 1 (Brad Penn) oil here.  It’s cheaper than Gibbs which is now $12-15 a qt vs $8 for the Penn.

Oil and part prices are less expensive if you own a biz. Most hobby people pay full price. I own diesels and use Rotella sometimes. Most people with classics barely drive their cars. Anybody here putting on 10K miles per year on a frame off? Doubt it. I drive restored cars in the rain and down dirt roads.

I used Valvoline VR1 in my Camaro but I have a bunch of cars so I switched to Penn Grade (Old Brad Penn) only to keep them all the same. Nothing wrong with the Valvoline VR1.
