Title: Early Z28 block
Post by: 67CruiseMaster on April 30, 2022, 04:11:08 PM
Is it possible that a December build Z28 block didn't get a Vin stamp on it?

I would be suspicious of it. Not the norm. Which plant was it built at? That time frame at NOR should be down by the filter.

I presumed he was referring to a 67!?

I’ve never heard of that one. The engine blocks-amongst all other parts—had date code/origin of manufacture plant codes stamped previously to install. The VIN stamp on the engine had to be matched to the vehicle it was going into on the assembly line. Countless reasons why, but try to imagine getting warranty work done with a blank pad. Possible, but highly unlikely. I’ve never heard of it happening.
“Numbers matching”.

Yes for 67 model year.

VO206MO
Block cast L26

Seller would not give me the VIN number to the car it came out of. He said that his family still owned the car but was selling the motor out of it.

V0206MO Is that a typo, otherwise something is seriously wrong there.

Zeros and O's are interchanged with one another very often in stamping, there are narrow o's wide o's racetrack o's etc  I's and 1's are quite often interchanged as well.

Yeah, but that's February 6 ! The car is a December build as I understand it...

Thanks for that...
The december build for a 67 threw me off as AFAIK there were only a couple of z28's built in december of 66.

Lots of holes in this story. The first z28 was produced on Dec 29th, 1966, so for it to be a Dec car it would have to be one of the very first few made, which I highly doubt.
Then to have a Feb engine adds even more to question here. I would have to see a stamping and casting dates to believe he even has a Feb 6th, 1967 MO engine.

See if you can get some pics.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that knowing Jon's car and having read much if not all of the history published on the first cars they were destined for road racing. If not mistaken there is a list - maybe on the TA forum here regarding the first cars.

Yes, but not likely.

2- VO206MO Block cast L26
I think the engine assembly date should be closer than that.

This picture is best one he had. I asked him to clean it off so we could see the broach marks and possibly see a hint of the vin number to the left of the assembly stamp but he says there is nothing there. I also asked him for the casting date picture. No response yet for that.

Is the seller from the Fresno area?  Looks like the block that was on craigslist back Jan of this year.  Jon Mello, did you happen to capture those photos from the CL link I sent you back in January?  I failed to do so.. :-\

He said he was from Oregon I think. But the ad is actually on facebook marketplace.

Picture isnt the best. I would have to defer to Kurt on this one. The earliest 67 z stampings I have are March 67. The MO stampings I have for Feb are from 1968 so they are of no help.
Would be interested in seeing a casting date and clock casting number. The MO when blown up look kind of odd to me.

Seller won't provide any other information. Too bad, I really wanted to pin him down on this block

If he wanted to sell it, he would post everything needed to be seen. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Dos Palos/Merced; near enough to Fresno.

Last sold on eBay, 4/20/22, for $2,500. Surprisingly relisted (not really). That should tell you everything you need to know.

It looks like the same photos.  The reply I got from him when I asked for the vin was; "no vin.  They didn't come with them til '72"

In that Ebay ad I see the casting is 3892657 and a way better pic of the stamping.

I can't really tell. Could be a modified ME. Would have to see in person. MO should have a VIN but ME, nope. There has been "some work done on the pad" from what I can see. I doubt I have anything to compare with that early, but later I can see what I might have.

Yupp same motor. Seems he gets around. Last message from him said he had a buyer in Washington for $3800. Ill pass. He's not forthcoming with additional info. Shady in my opinion.

When I didn't reply after his "no vin" text he sent another message a couple days later saying he had a guy coming that weekend to look at it if I wanted to make an offer..  Buyer Beware.

My first thought was ME changed to MO due to non VIN stamped pad too.

$10. My best offer.

The dash in the middle of the O is clearly visible. Interestingly, it's bid to $11,200 tonight.

Someone is gonna be pissed when they get it home and see that faint E under the O.

I was notified in facebook by a couple of watchers to the ebay auction. They told me he is bidding on his own auction. He got caught.

The $1116.83 bid is all the money and then some.

Someone else is trolling him with the stupid high number.  He just kept bumping it. -HA!
