Title: 1968 Camaro with roof design alternative
Post by: KurtS on February 06, 2022, 07:30:34 PM
Here's three pictures of an experimental roof design on a 1968 Camaro.
Looks like they were taken at the GM Tech Center.
I grabbed them years ago and don't recall the source.

Not my cup of tea.  The proportions are wrong.

Wonder if they were styling towards a removable section.

Looks like it may have been a Targa top.

I am glad that one didn’t make it.

That's so funny that you posted these photos Kurt because I was going to post this photo of what appears to be the same car without its "targa" center roof section.  Notice that there appears to be a 1970 full size Chevrolet and a 1970 - 1972 Chevelle in the background, which would date the photos you posted to a few years past the 1968 model year of the Camaro.  Notice how the windshield and the seats seem to be different from regular production as well.  The windshield kind of looks like what the second generation was going to have.  Perhaps this was a mockup for a targa topped second generation F-body that never made it to production?  Also notice that the car is wearing a side pinstripe in the three photos posted above but does not have it in this image.

I recently found it on the GM Photo Store Facebook page and they referred to it as the Aero Coupe: https://www.facebook.com/GMPhotoStore/photos/?ref=page_internal

It also reminds me of this pre-production 1968 GTO Targa top design study seen in this photo.  The proportions on the GTO look much better.

Thanks for posting those photos.  That top on the '68 Camaro looks like it would not be very aerodynamic.   I guess what they were looking for was styling and not so much function.  I'm glad too it never made it into production.  I think a targa top only looks good on a two seater.

The Camaro looks better with the top removed, but those sail panels are hideous.

Bit late here, only came across this thread today, thanks Kurt & Scott for those images of the '68 Camaro with the alternate roof,

love those in period photos  8)

Not a Chevy, but to go along with Scott's images of the G.T.O. I have this one in my files.

Scott, I wasn't sure where to post this, interesting photo ! why are there two Camaros in amongst the Fords at this show ?
The Mustangs are at the earliest '71's.
The Chevy display is at the far right of the image.
I think both Camaros are '68's, the green one on the left, is it possibly the Carib or Aero coupe concept ?
[CORRECTION - both are Ford products]

Any idea what show this might be ?

OK correction to my above post of the auto show, that is a green Maverick show car on the left, and the brown car with vinyl is a

Mustang, how could I have got that so wrong, don't know the difference between Camaros and Mustangs !  ::)

So this shouldn't even be in this thread  :P

Question: I can't seem to remove or modify my above post  ??? only quote, but I can do so with this post, is it because there is an

image  with the other one ? does any body else have this problem ?

Mike I was just in the middle of responding to your post.  You are right about the green car being a Maverick. It was a concept car called the Ford Maverick Estate.  According to a concept car website, "the Estate Coupe had a dark green padded “Landaulet” roof over the rear seating, and the body finished in limefire green. That unique color used a subtle gold-flake base, and complimented the avocado interior. Cast magnesium wheels had spoke design reminiscent of the classic wire wheels.  https://oldconceptcars.com/1930-2004/ford-maverick-estate-1970/

To answer your other question, I believe that after a certain amount of time after you make your post you are no longer to amend it.  Only the moderator is able to do that.  I remember having that problem when I would post a lot of stuff in the Trans Am section of this web site.  I would post something and then go back at a later date and not be able to fix it.  If you want, I can just delete your post.

By the way, I have been tricked by certain cars as well.  From certain angles some cars seem to resemble others.  To me that looks like the Detroit Auto Show.  Cobo Hall I believe.

I an unintended coincidence this Maverick concept car has a similar roof design as the Camaro that this thread was originally about, weird!
