New to the group. In the 1990's I owned a 1968 SS/RS 396 Matador Red, black vinyl top, 4spd Camaro and a 1969 Z/28. Regretted selling them ever since and am looking at buying another. Several are online but want to be sure they are true SS or Z/28's. I've attached a photo of the cal tag and engine stamping. I'm sure there is a lot of knowledge in this group and want to lean on it for help in the search for another 1st Gen Over the next several weeks.Im sure I will be posting about several until I find the right car. Any help would be appreciated 🙂
Thanks,
Chris

Will see what others say, but block looks like a restamp.
Can’t tell car details from the early 69 tags other than interior and exterior colors.

bcmiller,
That crossed my mind too when looking at the stamp but I'm far from an expert

Agree, the stamp doesn't look good.

Uh......I think I'd walk away from this one.

Don't completely rule it out yet, get a couple of better pics of the pad, get the block casting number and date while you ar at it. The VIN stamping looks plausible as far as character size, font and sequence, not a real definitive pic of the asseembly date (and pad surface) to work from.
The paint on the trim tag has got to be up there with kindergarten finger painting. Horrible - and, as noted, inconsequential to verifying anything other than color, interior, and body build date/sequence.

Steve

I have a much better picture of that pad. Restamp.
FWIW, there's a good chance the car is a Z.
