Title: 67 rare convertible nos quarter panel
Post by: 67conv6cyl on December 20, 2021, 03:04:37 PM
I have a nos 67 convertible quarter panel still in GM paper wrap with early embossed telephone receiver shape door jamb….I have never seen another….all other nos ones I have ever seen have later style door jamb embossment.  I also notice that all the reproduction ones have later style embossment…..does anybody make a repo that has the original style.
My original car is an O4 A build date and it has original style telephone shape door jamb …does anyone know when they changed the stamping?

Can you post a photo of what you're talking about? I've never noticed a difference.

You've won the lottery on that one, if you can find someone with deep pockets doing a high end restoration on an early 67 vert and simply must have it.  Most aren't aware of this 67 "oddity".  My 11B LOS Nov 15 build date, per the NCRS report, has this first version panel. Makes me wonder if there was a car or two at each transition period that had two different version panels?

I know they are rare….and these are in perfect condition in original GM wrapping with copper like banding ….I also notice from factory they have the sound deadening already sprayed on inner side…I have never seen this in other nos panels.

Are the GM tags white and red or Aqua, black & white?

GM letting is in aqua. The wrapping is like a thin corrugated cardboard with another almost cloth material in between two pieces of the thin corrugated cardboard. I unwrapped only to look at it and this wrapping kept the piece very very clean.

Check and see if the panels are dated - the date will be in the area of the trunk jamb and would be a format like H11  with the alpha (H) representing the plant and the numeral indicating the week stamped.

The part is actually stamp dated     I sent pictures in to be posted.  I never knew that GM sprayed the sound deadening on panels before they where installed on car.

I went to a chevy dealer in the early 70,s to buy a fender. I went through their stock trying find one without a dent. Very few had any wrapping or box. They did have GM labels. Of course I had to buy one with a dent in it.

I'm surprised they had the sound deadener sprayed on the insides.  Probably didn't trust the dealers to do it.

When I worked at Van Nuys, quality started to mark parts that were sent back to Fisher Body as the rejected items began to appear at Norwood.  Perhaps Fisher Body sent these rejects to the parts division.

This panel after unwrapped Had no dents or flaws at all that I can notice. However It does have the date stamping in trunk area… and I read somewhere that GM nos sheet metal parts didn’t have those stamps unless they where stamped to go on production car….not sure if this is true or not can anyone verify? Other nos fenders and sheet metal that I have does not have these date stamps.

It looks like the sheet metal date stamp photo was shot from the underside?  Can we get a shot from the topside of the gutter section?  Trying to determine what it is - H41 1  or?  Are both side the same?

I believe codes were stamped on most parts, even if they were not for production as if there was a problem with the sheet metal, they would be able to trace the source:

I believe stamp is( H 11  1 ) I have other original nos hoods, front fenders, valance’s and header panels with GM stickers on them bought from a Chevrolet dealer years ago and none seem to have the date stamps…..I will send clear pictures of date stamp on quarter panel to cook-dw tonight so hopefully he can post again for me.

100% this is exactly what happened.

All of the following use only the week of production no Alpha for plant.

Front fenders are stamped just above the 2  bolt holes where the fender attaches to the rad support. (photo)

Front lower valences are stamped on one of the flanges which meets the fender extensions

Front upper valences are stamped along the front lower edge where the grille screws into.

These are the first I have seen with sound deadener already applied.
The NOS date stamped 69 convertible quarters I installed on the L78 pacer did not have sound deadener sprayed in them.

That is not true. I had some NOS 1967 rear quarters from May 1985 that had those stampings. If quarters dont have the stampings, they most likely are not NOS panels.

My understanding is sometime around 05C the telephone receiver shape was changed to the different style. The stamping dies would wear out and as they were tooling for the 68 production changes, the indent shape did not matter. I know at one point Heartbeat City had the correct receiver shaped 67 convertible quarter panels. I bought a set. They fit perfect but pricey. I think they were produced from GM dies. Other than the HC quarter panels, all others I've seen have the new indent shape, even most NOS quarters, unless produced prior to around end of May 1967.

There's a recent discussion on this over in the Originality section, where it appears the switch from second to third design came around 4C or 4D build week.  These NOS quarters the OP has are the second design.
