Title: DZ suffix ?
Post by: john jay 69Z on December 12, 2021, 04:51:37 AM
Hi, I am looking at the Meccum Kissimmee Auction in January 2022 and seen a Daytona Yellow Z28 Lot R176 for Thursday 01/13/22 !  https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0122-486940/1969-chevrolet-camaro-z28/
its engine suffix is V0820DZ although from the 8 onwards the font size is larger than the others is that normal? the car is built 09/22/69 which would make it 09D are the dates ok?
I looked at my engine and it is V0902DZ and built 09/15/69, any insight as to Lot R176 being ok
Thank you again for any input
John

Although the 'pad' isn't totally to my satisfaction, it's possible that the 'apparent' larger size fonts as the stamp goes to the right is due to the 'angle' of the photograph along with the lens used on his camera.  It's curious enough that I'd want to look a little closer though... and examine the cast date on the block, etc...

My grandson who isn’t quite 6 yet could take better pics of the drivetrain stampings. :(

I believe  your suspicions are correct - the DZ is definitely larger that the previous date code characters. look at the bottom of the "D" in relation to the previous character - obviously slightly larger. I can't say it's incorrect, but it would bear a closer examination.

Nice car, but why would you spend all of that time and money in a restoration like this, and then put the wrong shifter in it ? If you wanted to get away from a wobbly slip fit cushion, buy the reproduction bolt on with the correct round handle -

Regards,
Steve

I think the angle of the engine pad picture is terrible. It might be OK, I can’t tell based on that crappy photo.

Brought it here to view. It looks like there is a Z or a 7? (faint) after the enlarged Z

It is a "DZ" Danzo. it is just the way it was stamped. I have seen many where the bottom of the Z is very light

I think its the angle of the pic that makes the fonts get larger at the end. I think its a good stamping

Hard to tell, but sure looks like the last 4 digits are bigger to me. And is that the top of the original Z stamp? And the Z also looks lower?... Danny

WOW.. OK, so did they find a block, deck it and rent the gang holder and stamp it? Never seen a jumped double stamp travel that far when striked, I mean struck. Need block casting number and casting date to help.
Someone request that info. ... Danny

Agreed, it's the angle. Pad is OK.

Looks like a nice car and I think it will get a buyer within that price range.
