I am going to redo the spatter paint in the trunk of my '69
I found this new product which claims to reproduce the exact orig color.
Its the Black / Aqua color on the right in my photo and I added a shot of a trunk done with it.It's darker that what is currently the color of my trunk.
Does this look like the correct factory color ?
Thanks again for the expert advice.

I don't know if they changed colors during 67,68 and 69. But based on what is in my (67) trunk area, the new color you have appears to be to dark. Lets see what JohnZ and Jerry say.

All I have to compare it to is my 68 and I don't know if there are variation between the years. The photo that you have of it applied to the trunk looks too dark to me. Also on the 2 side by side pictures in the first attachment what is the difference between the 2 colors, are they different products?
-
The color on the right is thr "Gray/White" spatter paint that I understand was used until 1966, then GM changed to the "Black/Aqua"

Here are a couple of photos of the original spatter paint in my '69; your sample panel looks a little too dark.

There are only two people selling correct truck spatter paint for first gen cars now. Brian Henderson at Supercar Workshop and Larry Christensen from Camaros plus. We stock Larry's but I'm not sure if Brian is marketing his or just making it for his customer's cars.
I am also working with Dave Cunningham from BASF. I gave him three original trunk pieces to match in his chem lab. All of the other stuff available today is not correct and wont' fly in concours restored judging.

I believe I read that Brian Henderson's product has a very short shelf llife, he mixes and he uses it. It is not practical to sell it. Any pictures around of what the Larry C. product looks like? Is special equipment needed to spray it?
-
Looks like the factory original trunk paint. You need a pressure gun to spray it. Comes in a quart can.

Anyone know how to a hold of Larry to purchase some of his splatter paint?

John Z. Does you car with the houdstooth trunk mat have a rectangular sound deadening tar type material mat glued on the trunk floor where the trunk floor starts to slope up to go over the rear axle? If it does, was the mat applied before or after the spatter paint? I have a 68 deluxe interior car that has the sound deadening mat but at one point in its life the trunk was resprayed and so was the mat. I am restoring the trunk but don't know if the mat gets covered with the spatter paint. Thanks for the help.

Yes, it has the deadener mat, and it's not spatter-painted; the deadener mat was applied in the Fisher Trim Shop, after paint.

JphnZ. Thank you very much for the information, the help is greatly appreciated.

When I restored my 69Z back in 1995 - 2000, Risk's First Gen had some GM NOS "touch-up" splatter paint. I used this because at that time, no one had formulated correct spatter paint. I need to touch mine up but do not have any paint left!! Attached are few picks.
Mine looks a bit lighter in color than John Z's, but given the mix in the can vs. that sprayed at the assy plant, I suspected differences.
PS: Does anyone sell correct rear seat dividers for rear fold down seats? I have send originals that are black with a tar-like paint on them.

Here is one more pic with a little more detail of the color....
JohnZ - would you mind posting a few more pics showing the splatter paint spray pattern from different views about your trunk?
-
Here are three more photos of the trunk area.
-
What got the gray spatter and what got the turquoise spatter
-
What got the gray spatter and what got the turquoise spatter
69's got aqua and dark gray.
-
So, it would be correct to go with the color you like...
-
So is the "correct" paint water based like the rattle can stuff? Was the factory spatter paint also water based? (it would seem so in some cars I've had that ended up with wet floors).

What kind of pressure gun do you shoot Larrys trunk paint with. A HVLP or a shotz gun.
-
When I had my 69 trunk sprayed with Larrys paint, we tried to use HVLP paint gun but it kept plugging up the tip. We had to switch to a shotz gun. I can't remember what pressure we used. The shotz gun gave it a more original looking pattern then the paint gun did.
-
thanks for the help maybe someone else will have the pressure that I need to use.
-
was there a difference from the 67's to 69"s or were they all the same?
-
thanks for the help maybe someone else will have the pressure that I need to use.
I'm going to guess on HVLP Start w 2.0 Tip 16-18 lbs Air at Gun (Not Tip)
Paint ? Read TDS for product spraying info, If nothing determine product type 1K or Solvent based.
mix accordingly, if no info start at 1:1 and I would then start removing reducer to thicken test sprays
or try to lessen Air Pressure. Practice on a file cabinet or old inner fender to get spray technique

i saw a restorer shoot the trunk matte black then use the "flick the paintbrush" technique with aqua paint to simulate the aqua spatter. Looked damn convincing to me. Getting the flat aqua interior wall paint (oops- sorry - did I say interior flat wall paint) the right viscosity is the key. Use your finger (like you're flicking off a bug off your finger) at the ends of the paint loaded brush and "flick" the paint onto the surface. It takes practice, its tedious - but it looks awesome. (They also flicked the entire brush too........)

There's a pretty thorough thread on spatter paint, styles, painting techniques on the Yenko site. Note that LA trunk spatter differ quite a bit from NOR.

Curious of the differences in color and/or technique between 67-8-9. Probably differences in plants too?
