Title: 1969 Van Nuys built z28
Post by: john jay 69Z on October 25, 2021, 06:32:12 AM
Hi all, I am looking into a car for a friend but  I am not sure about a couple of things,
(1)  trim tag states 04C   and on same line M 572 which I believe is the 13th day of April 572nd car produced that day on Van Nuys built cars.
(2) The engine is V0418DZ  so 18th day of April,
(3)the VIN numbers fall in the April range of vin's
(4) the M20 has P9D07A 7th of April, and  the 12bolt is 12 Dec 68, my thoughts are that some thing is not adding up.
Can an issue with production cause engine to have a latter date prefix,  than the trim tag date?
I don't have date code cast number of Block yet but it is a 0010 Block with information that has been passed on to us
Any info would be useful as I always thought that engine prefix can be up to 4-6 weeks before built date.
Thanks in advance

I may stand corrected. But the trim tag date is when the car was started in production and not when it ended ( rolled out the door). The engine is very tight on time, but possible, I think?

Order an NCRS report. If it shipped 4/18 or later, all should be good. BTW, April 13, 1969 was a Sunday, so that would not be the anticipated start of production.

An 04C/M572 combination would have been final-assembled on or about April 22, 1969.

Very unlikely the engine is original to the car. The 4-6 week guideline does not apply to Z/28s. Other Z/28s built at that time have engines built April 7 or 8. April 18 engines were used in Z/28s built after the strike, late June. Trans could be original to the car, should have a con VIN on it. Axle is not likely to be original.

Agreed on the axle, much more typical to have the axle date on top of the build date.
04C 633599 had an 0418 axle and my 10D 531xxx had a 1031 axle.

There are so many fakes and restamps out there, especially engine stampings that I would have that verified before you decide to purchase.
