I guess I can ask my friend who owned a 1968 Z28 and see if he can remember the tag number as it had a M21 transmission.

I would think the AiM could clarify the answer. It does for 1969.

Are we talking for Z28 or L78? Because depending on axle ratio there are differences.

Its the assembly line m22 transmission from the L89 that was just discovered .

Do you mean 8N429717 ?

The stamping on the trans is probably just as important as the tag. I know you won’t get a ratio code on a 68, but there are ways to tell if the gear set is original.

Tags are out there. So it’s not a definite indicator.

I would have to look at the A.I.M. to see which tag was being used at that assembly time.

Car is in great original condition . Talked to the original owner . Its a local legend in my area. When the engine was removed in the mid seventies the car disappeared . Until the engine was found .

Having a transmission tag is nice, but not needed if you have the partial VIN stamped on the trans. If that tag was with the transmission, it is likely original.

What is the axle ratio of the car?  4.56 ?
