Title: Flame arrestor tube angle
Post by: Bigfish45 on July 21, 2021, 03:11:16 PM
After 20 years I finally decided to put a flame arrestor on my reproduction 396 open element air cleaner. I just noticed that the tube is installed at an angle in the base and the top of the tube is cut at an angle so it will be parallel with the base. But, when I slide the flame arrestor on the tube, the screen sits at an angle. Is this normal or correct? I have never owned an original air cleaner assembly so I do know what it is suppose to look like. One other thing, do any of you put epoxy or lock-tite on this arrestor to keep it from falling off? My is not an interference fit so, it would be easy for this thing to vibrate off. Any help on this mystery would be greatly appreciated. Please view attached pictures.

Here are pictures of my original L35 cleaner base (67  05B). The top of the pipe is cut straight and the flame arrester sits with a level look. This sure is tough to pry off!
If you need other pictures let me know.

Looks like the factory pipe has less than 90 degrees of bend. The repop appears to have full 90 degrees.

Looks like the factory pipe has less than 90 degrees of bend. The repop appears to have full 90 degrees.

It should be clarified that the 'two 45deg bend' pipe was correct for big blocks, for at least part of the production year, but that the 90 deg bend pipe was correct for small blocks for the great majority (or all?) of the year...      This thread from 2016 addressed most of that..
