Title: Stripe Template
Post by: red69 on July 05, 2021, 03:34:46 PM
Looking to buy a stripe template for a 69 Z-28. Best manufacturer? Or all made by same company?

I think that it is safe to say that with any stencil stripe kit, you should expect to spend some quality time with thin blue painter's tape in order to get all the edges and gaps just as they should be.

I know that was true for the DX1 stencil stripe template used by the restoration shop on my '69 RS back in 2014.  The restoration shop sourced the stencil kit so I'm not sure where they got it from, but they spent a good four hours getting it correct on the car, i.e. to get all of the edges to line up properly across panels and the gap above and below the 327 fender engine badge to be spaced correctly.

.....and yes, I did put the stripe under the clear coat - just made better sense for my car.

Sure. I've used Stencils & Stripes for many years on several cars (D90 and DX1) As noted above, many hours required to "get it right". I was specifically referring to the 1969 Z/28 striping on the deck lid. The drawing they include with the kit is layout based on a sampling (measuring) of one car. As we all know these stripes weren't all perfect from the factory, but the drawing in this kit is way off and when laying it out with fine-line tape it became apparent that it wasn't going to be good. The RH deck lid stripe is skewed to the right and the left is kinda straight, but doesn't go far enough to the left to incorporate the "o" on the Camaro emblem. I re-taped it using the dimensions from the AIM with better results. I looked at many pictures of "original paint" cars on this sight and others along with old magazine photos from my collection.
BTW, Ralph of Stencils & Stripes in Park Ridge, IL is a great guy. I've spoke to him on several occasions, he's very helpful.
Hope this helps someone.
