Post by: 69RALLYSPORTZ28 on April 22, 2021, 03:23:01 AM
Does anyone else have an original DZ 302 block with two sideways letters M at the beginning and the end of the plant, date and engine suffix stamping?

I have a different picture and it looks like 9N603507, but it's hard to see the 6.
Pad looks ok.

Kurt, that explains the incorrect VIN posted, but what was your opinion of the pre/post 'sideways M'?   Have you ever seen anything like that before? (I haven't).   I also thought the 'std' characters in the app stamp looked OK, but since the broach marks were not captured in the photo, I would not say that the stamp was 'original'...   Would you?  and if so, how do you explain the pre/post characters stamped??

The engine pad stamp appears original to me, font and characters look good. The "M" was probably added by an owner during a trip to the machine shop, I always stamped my initials in an inconspicuous part of the casting in case it got "destroyed" or "lost" during the machining process (I wouldn't have done this obvious a stamp location !) Maybe that sounds paranoid, and I guess it was, as I never had one turn up missing (but I've heard horror stories over the years, too). If the VIN stamp above the filter is a 6 rather than an 8 as it seems from a casual glance, that could be pretty close to the range. My Z11's 3/17 built block carries a 620 VIN -

Regards,
Steve

There ARE people who can perfectly match the factory stampings, but replicating the factory broach marks after a machining is not as easy!~

I'm like Ric..  I want to see factory broach marks before verifying authenticity!

And like Steve, I've also added my initials to a block before going to the machine shop, but never would I add them to the factory pad area, and can't understand anyone adding those M's to a factory stamping!

Gary, Sadly there are a few shops that can duplicate the broach marks.

The best way to verify stampings is to have a known original for the date stamp in question.

I have a friend that worked at Motor Machine in San Diego. He said they stamped double M's on their rebuilds for warranty claims.
