4 speed trans p8b14c #18L336738
p = Muncie 4-speed transmission
8 = 1968
b = February
14 = Day of the month (Valentine's Day :-*)
c = M22. This is the part that doesn't fit because this suffix code (c) was not used until October 1968 and this transmission was assembled on February 14, 1968!? ??? Someone might have restamped these numbers!?
18L336738 is the partial vin which the factory stamped on during assembly of the car. How many times is this partial vin stamped on this transmission?

Do you have a picture of the stamping? Paul is correct, it shouldnt have a C after the date.
-
no picture the trans is still in the car.
-
You can still get a picture of the transmission code with the transmission in the car. The partial vin is a little tricky on Los Angeles cars because the vin is stamped on top of the transmission. I've photographed my partial vin with the aid of a mirror, a droplight, and a steady hand; so it's not impossible.

I have two 68 Camaro Muncies here both of which have a small C after the date.I Don't know what it stands for but it's not M22 Both the tranny's are out I will take a picture and post them

Well I took some pics but I can't post them since I pretty much suck at using computers.I know how to post them but they are to big and I don't know how to make the file size smaller.I can send them to someone or can someone explain how to shrink the file size on the pics.
-
Pretty common for 68's to have the small c after the code.
-
Good info. I just learned something new. I love it when info like this is shared.

What does it signify? If I'm following the gist of this thread it would not indicate M-22 during '68
-
I'm guessing; c = Chevrolet? ??? Anybody know for sure?
Paul

It's not really a "C". It's more of a square with the right side missing and it's smaller than the VIN font. I believe these are Inspectors stampings. There are others as well... Triangle, square, diamond, etc...
I used to have a picture of the "square c" but can't seem to find it. JohnZ? Kurt? Rich? Jerry? Tony? ANYBODY????

Ed, I take it not all transmission got one of these stampings? My trans is clean except for the P8A08.

Here is mine... P8D26, and then what looks like half of an "E"

Here is something else weird about my transmission. It has "R-I" embossed in the case. These letters are not engraved, they're raised. It had to be drawn into the sand mold by somebody. Does anyone else have this?? ???

Hey Mike -
I've the exact same "R-I" embossed, upside down on my transmission case also! It's in a slightly different location, about 10 o'clock as compared to the transmission fill plug (with the fill plug being the center of the clock). How about anybody else?

I've got one "010" , one "660" and two "661" cases sitting out of cars rigth now...I'll take a look later today and see what I have on mine.
The inspection stamp makes sense...especially when one knows that it is not a "C" but a square with one side missing
-
It's not an inspection stamp. The inspection stamp is located on top of the trans.
This was in the gang stamp and there's only one symbol in 68.
In 67, some trans have a mini-7 after the code.
I have not been able to discern a pattern, yet.....
-
Could it be a mark to determine the shift?? Were the transmissions assembled in shifts??
-
OK, looked at the trannys today
010 = no R-I
660 = has R-I
661's (x 2) = no R-I
I took pictures if anyone wishes to see. there are other markings on the 661's and the 010...
-
So far, 3 cases in a row, the "R-I" has appeared on only the 660 cases. Maybe it stands for Race-Inspired! :D
I took pictures if anyone wishes to see.

It would appear that this car is for sale on eBay right now. 11 years or so later, WOW!! Stamp looks too high up on the block, like it was re-stamped with the heads off?? Danny
