Who makes the best conversion to electronic ignition? Looking for product that only has one wire coming out so the distributor doesn't show that it's been converted. Thanks

THIS (https://www.lectriclimited.com/breakerless-se-electronic-ignition-conversion) is the one I've used on my 68 Camaro and my 69 Corvette for several years now with no issues. Works like it's supposed to work.

Pertronix has two wires coming out of the distributor.

Most of the people on VCCA.chat say if you have pertronix, keep an extra kit in the trunk in case of breakdown. No personal experiance, just repeating...Joe

Thanks, I forgot about that. What I've done in the past is combine the wires in one shrink tube.

Interesting. I don't know of anyone that have had problems with them. But my circle of 15 or so may not be a good gage.

I’ve had good luck for over 10 yrs with Pertronix on both my ‘66 Chevelle & ‘69 Camaro. The 2 wires out of the distributor is not an issue for me - neither was replacing stock coils with their higher output units.

I ordered the Breakerless conversion that Ed recommended. Thanks for the help and advice

I put the same one as Ed mentioned in my Z. Utilizes the white resistor wire. Very simple install. Also got a set of date coded wires from them. Coil is a "correct" one from a vette supplier. Fires right up, no issues with timing. No issues under load.

Wish they would update this with a rev limiter.
Even so, with the limited miles most of our cars see, wondering why you would want to change out the points? Not just that, but there is something rewarding to me about whipping out the old dwell meter and the allen wench and setting the dwell. Kind of take me back.

What advantage do you see with newer coil and points set up? Any performance enhancement? I have 396 with original points and coil.

For me, it was kind of the opposite feeling with regards whipping out the old dwell meter (I’ve had since the early ‘70’s). With GM/Chevy putting the distributor in the back of the engine where accessibility is a real issue, especially as you get older, changing points/condenser by either laying across the fender or pulling the distributor became a “been there, done that” situation. At this point, I want reliability and as much as possible and to get in the car, turn the key, and ride; other routine maintenance items not withstanding.
Converting to electronic and removing mechanical points was right up there with swapping out the original voltage regulator with an electronic version - just swapped the cover off of my old regulator to keep the look original. Also RFI issues are minimized to some degree by making these conversions. Wasn’t a real issue for me but it can be.

Go with the Accel electronic conversion. I would not recommend Pertronix.

I installed this kit yesterday. It's a very easy install and seems to be working rather well.
