Title: SS & Z/28 stripe colors
Post by: x66 714 on February 20, 2021, 11:06:56 PM
I've been looking around here for the paint codes for stripes. Was code 10 used for black stripes, code 50 for white stripes & code 72 for Z10 & Z11? Subject came up on FB. Thank you, Joe

Joe the Camaro stripe colours for the 1969 MY are listed on the lower right side of the attached Ditzler chart. White stripe code is a match for the Dover White code, but note the black stripe code shown (9000) differs from the Tuxedo Black code (9300).......
No idea if this is a typo on the chart, or if they were indeed slightly different. But to me, surely the factory would have used what they already had (Tuxedo) and not added complexity and expense by introducing another paint shade.....
May be best left to the FB experts to debate!

I saw that in the Dupont chart also. Because of the colors listed, I'm wondering if it means pinstriping colors because orange isn't listed. Thank you, Joe

Saw that too, but figured orange stripes were only on the Z10/Z11 (short mid-production timeframe) rather than throughout the model year, so probably why that wasn’t specifically listed. I’d imagine those codes applied to all stripe options, DX1, D90 etc.

Also note that the Camaro red stripe color is Corvette Monza Red.

Older thread but the shop is getting ready to apply the black rally stripes this week.   Is there any confirmation that the black stripe code is different than Tuxedo Black code?

Interesting:  https://classicbroncos.com/forums/threads/ppg-dcc9000-or-dcc9300-single-stage-paint.191730/

Appears there is a difference in the paint colors per this site.

The 1969 GM Dupont paint chart lists Tuxedo Black [Lucite code 99L] as both body and stripe color.

There are 33 paint chips on the chart; only one of them is black.

Thanks William.  So is the GM Dupont chip more accurate/what GM used vs the PPG charts?  PPG lists Tuxedo Black as 9300 and Stripes as 9000.   Appears Tuxedo Black has a hint of blue in it vs 9000 which is "pure black".

Not on my chart. Listed as 99L as shown, also on the interior and striping charts.

From my body shop, here's the difference between 9000 (black) and 9300 (Tuxedo Black) -

"The 9000 is 1028 parts straight toner, the 9300 is 1026 parts black and 2 parts violet."

Dupont was largely owned by GM in those days and was the paint used in production.

Dupont was largely owned by GM in those days and was the paint used in production.

Wasn’t it the other way around - DuPont infused cash into GM buying something like 23% GM in the 1920’s - saving GM from collapse.  Due to anti trust issues, DuPont had to divest themselves from GM in 1965.  However, strong business ties still remain to this day.

That could well be. I was aware of a long business relationship, not certain of the details.

Jeff Gordon's NASCAR race car was prominently sponsored by Dupont, now Axalta.

To the eye, the addition of blue which is a cooler hue makes black appear more "black". Do a color study or enter the art or paint field.  I've painted many cars with cheaper brands that do not obtain a deep black like others. Dive into the paint industry on a daily basis and pick up a gun if you want an education.
