Title: 1968 Ash Trays (again!)
Post by: bertfam on December 10, 2020, 12:21:02 AM
Ok guys. We need your help once more. We're looking for original cars with colored interiors with ash tray colors OTHER than black or wood grain. Post a picture of the ash tray, the build date and the interior code on your trim tag please. And a picture of the rear of the ash tray would be great as well. The part where the front is mounted to the tray. We need to see how it's painted.

Just to be clear, we're looking for data from blue, red, and gold interiors without woodgrain ashtrays. Data from black dash/interior cars is not relevant.

Thanks folks

Ed

Update:  Looking for early survivor '68 Camaros with D55, Z23 or Z87.  Trying to break the code on painted ash trays.

Some cars with color interiors have been observed with colored ashtrays. The question is that factory or a owner change.
Doesn't matter when they were built. What matters is having a colored interior (gold, blue, red) and woodgrain surround and not a woodgrain ashtray. Then what is the ashtray color? Please include the plant and build date. :)
Thanks!

I thought I had shared these before but maybe not.

723 interior code (and yes I am positive as I still have the deluxe door panels), NOR.  Console non gauge car too.  I can't remember 100% the build date but it had to be pre-Nov 67.  Astro Vent script glass.  A couple other members here will remember the car and can back the info.  Photos are around the 84-85 timeframe.  Interior color was changed to all black so there was no reason to just paint the ashtray.  This was done from the factory.  I also remember it having a black ashtray door.  What I don't remember if it was smooth or pebble (but I wanna say it was smooth).  Not sure if this helps any. If not sorry that's all I can remember and have.

This picture is NOT a verified original car. But is shows what we are looking for.

Again, this is NOT a verified original example.

I would like data from any colored interior. Gotta have the data on the black ashtrays as well as the colored ashtrays. And there's not that many original colored interiors out there.

"DW" I still like those shots; is that typical of the blackout treatment for the dash when a Black Ashtray was installed on a other than Black dash front?

Yes from what I have witnessed.

Car currently has a big block. I don’t think it’s a Z28.

Thanks, the Z I spoke of is well restored. It had blue custom interior too.

Not what we are looking for as far as an an ashtray other than black or woodgrain - but I believe Kurt wanted examples of all types, including black.

Here is a very early Norwood car, 08E of 1967.  Can't guarantee the ashtray is original, but I would bet it is. Black dash and black ash tray.  We know this is the way black dash early cars were, but it is shown as an example.

Actually, I asked for colored interiors and not black interiors.

Well sorry, I misunderstood. I thought black was “any color”. :)

I also misunderstood the “gotta have data on the black ashtrays as well”.

I just wanted to post an example of what the early black dash with woodgrain center insert cars had - a black ashtray. ;)

Defining what we want is definitely part of the problem....

1968, LOS, 12D, 724 RED INT, NCRS SHIPPER PROD DATE 12/26/1967

My car is close to this one as well. 1968, LOS, 01C build date, 722 Gold interior. Wood grained instrument panel but smooth black ash tray. Gold interior. The pictures I had of it from early in 1987 before I changed it to a black interior got lost long ago so no images of that combo to share. Do you blame me for wanting to ditch a "custom" brown diamond tuck and shag carpet interior in a hurry?

No, but you are guilty of not going back to Gold. But I get it, it's easier sometimes.

That’s one.  Is it painted black around the opening like the gold dash I posted above?  Also is the ashtray smooth or pebble?  Am I correct in assuming this is born with and not restored?

I am thinking the dash area of the ashtray being painted black on a colored I dash is part of the data they are looking for.  Sometimes the researcher are vague about what they are looking for in order to not taint the data.

So that leaves me wondering if colored ashtray cars had colored dash in that area or black. I assumed color ashtrays would have colored dash area, but maybe not?

In all my years of looking at every 1968 Camaro (best year) I come across, I have never seen what CRG is looking for. That does not mean it does not exist, just pretty rare.

A blue, red, gold, or turquoise interior with a matching color blue, red, gold, or turquoise ashtray. Not black. Not woodgrain. Not owner modified.

About as rare as hen's teeth.
