Title: Tape inside door, same as spoiler tape?
Post by: dannystarr on September 23, 2020, 03:38:33 AM
I just picked up a nice collection of classic cars and parts that I have been looking at for quite some time. On one car I am pulling apart, I noticed the black tape behind the door panel. It is on the craft paper between the metal door and the panel. Two pieces on the bottom. That tape is the same as the tape under the spoiler. Also looks to be the same tape at the rear upper shock mount. Is this known info?... Danny

That's the one we're all trying to figure out. I found chalkboard tape but it's a little too smooth. It's also not made of paper, more like vinyl...Joe

Has anyone looked at, or tried, Gaffer Tape??

I've bought a roll and will try it on a '57 Nomad I'm working on now... no idea how well as yet that it will work or look.

I've found that exact tape used on the shock mount area and spoiler to be used on the door and quarter panel water shields. Comparatively speaking side by side was the same.

I remember the discussions. I just couldn't remember if we thought they were the same tape in all 3 of THOSE locations. I have been using Gaff tape for many years. SO sticky it sticks to dirt! I have never had to replicate it on a car, but if I did, Gaff seems a good choice. Tape on the door panel water barrier looks to measure a 32nd of an inch shy of 2.5"... Danny

Perhaps shrinkage? Paper does shrink a little with age.

FWIW My bet is the tolerance specifications for the slitting of the tape by the manufacturer was/is/are greater than +/- 1/32.
TODAY rolls of paper are CURRENTLY supplied for printing with a tolerance of +/- 1/16 across the width.

Is it possible we are overthinking this? Could the "sticky" part of the tape be what is seen from the bottom side of the deck lid? These cars were not intended to be around in 50+ years when they were built. Would it be possible to see a picture of the entire area covered by this tape? How about one from the bottom possibly showing the "grain" of the tape? I also asked in the other post listed below to keep this discussion alive.
Thanks, Doc.

Doc,
I see what you are saying now. Close-ups of the actual tape through the holes. There seems to be some good pic's of that in the other post. I will try to get ya some more pic's... Danny

I have some pic's to start. I will try to get some underside deck lid close-ups of this car. Before moving on to another car. NOTE: I put a small dab of glue stick on the corner to fold it back down before re-installing spoiler... Danny

How come the stripes continue at the rear of the spoiler, i.e. to the lip of the trunk lid?

I noticed that also, Tim~     must be a repaint?  Or an earlier restoration?

Crap I KNEW that question was coming. Car is original paint. 2nd owner {who owned the car for about 45 years} LOVED to spray lacquer and said there was WAY to many Z/28's in his area in the early 70's and wanted to have his car different. So he Shelbyized it ??? TOO MANY things happening right now. I have not decided if I am going to have it sprayed or not. I have a guy that will spray the Lacquer. Could just spray the rear light tail panel and edge of deck lid. May sell car... Danny

I think Others may also Confirm that the Spoiler was installed when the Stripes were painted at the factory so the forward stopping point is accurate for Factory applied paint.

Great pics Danny! When time allows please let us see the tape from under the deck lid.
Thanks, Doc.

Hey Danny,  There is NO SUCH THING as a perfect car...  just go with it and tell people it's painted that way so you can identify it more easily!

169Indy:   Our comments were regarding the paint stripes NOT stopping at the rear of the spoiler (and continuing onto the rear edge of the deck lid).     In the first photo, we could not see the rear panel and that the stripes had been shelby'ized'...  :)

Oh, OK yes now that I re read it, I understand now, I had the forward edge on the Brain.
Thanks,,,,,,Funny F*RD-ized.

For Me & My taste yes I would get the rear repaired.

BTW The Tape Cleaned up Nice.

Is it Black on both the Top and Sticky side,   It Sure does appear such as oppose to some Crepe tapes that have a lighter sticky side.

This car received "Legends" at MCACN before I owned it. According to the last owner that owned the car during judging... Steve Shauger said it didn't bother him and that he thought it was cool. And not to worry about it. I have not decided yet what the plan will be. Still waiting for re-cert in my name. I need to decide what to do with it. If I keep it much longer, I might have that back panel shot... Anyway, back to the subject at hand.... Tape. I will try in the coming days to get more pic's... Danny

Danny,  if you repaint the rear panel, then I'd also suggest repainting the rear most lip of the trunk lid to get it back to 'factory mode'.. :)    .. but I kind of like the skunk stripes going down the back to make it unique.. :)

You might try removing the added paint....

Oh yes, for sure, I agree. I got an estimate of $1,500. That includes the lip of the trunk. I made sure to tell him that at the time of the estimate. But like you said, not really a big deal, I COULD go with it, but I don't like it sometimes. Other times it looks cool to me. You would be surprised  how many people DON'T know it's incorrect, and think it looks great.

Kurt, I mentioned that to the painter and asked if he thought it could be done. He said maybe, but not likely cause they are BOTH real lacquer. And it would be super time consuming. I have been told I have surgeon hands, so I may give it a shot. If I screw it up.... Then I have it painted  ;)

If I wanted to remove the 'white overlay' paint, then I'd wetsand with 600 grit paper, until I began seeing 'blue' underneath, then switch to a finer paper or rubbing compound...

I tried to get Dave to fix this prior to MCACN.
If you are going to try it... tape off the blue. using the thinnest(z - direction) most durable tape you can locate... stick the tape to your clothes or something first if the adhesive seems too "strong" so it won't harm the paint, lift paint.
It can be done...
IF you have a paint gauge you can check the blue directly beside and then on the stripe and then you can check after.

most of all tape off the blue OR else you will thin it out near the edges ALOT.

I think we're getting closer & closer to NCRS craziness here folks!!!!   ;D

Are you kidding me... we in the Camaro research group ARE WAY MORE ANAL THAN THE NCRS crowd on everything EXCEPT surface texture and color/metallic of exterior paint. TRUST me that the Camaro judges are way way way more knowledgeable than most NCRS judges.
