Title: 1967 Camaro as seen in Dealer Ads inside High School Yearbooks from 1967
Post by: SMKZ28 on May 12, 2020, 03:02:02 PM
Back in the day automobile dealerships and other businesses would place advertisements inside High School yearbooks to help promote themselves to the newly graduated and their parents.  "Jaybird" has been researching these and compiling them at his blog for several years.  I thought I would gather the ads featuring Camaros and create separate threads for each of the three 1st Generation model years, starting with this one for model year 1967.  Notice how many times the word "Camaro" is misspelled in these ads, usually with the letter "e."  It's also cool to look at the dealership memorabillia in the background.  Enjoy!

See all of these and more here: https://annualmobiles.blogspot.com/

Stay tuned for threads on 1968 and 1969.

The same tactics were in my yearbooks during the 1980s. One that I remember was (now gone) Rancho Chevrolet, Reseda, Ca. Select students 'posed' for the photographs. At the time, I did not care for these type of promotions for local business in a High School yearbook. My feeling was why did certain business get the special treatments…or dare I say 'lobbied' school officials.

Businesses paid money to have these in the year book....it helped keep the cost of the year book down for the students to purchase one! Year book organizers would solicit car dealers (Pointing out what a great graduation gift a new car would make)

Exactly my sentiment. 'Who' received the money for the solicitation? As I remember, the yearbooks were not cheap…even back then.

ASB would have collected the money and appropriated it to the yearbook committee to help with publishing costs. Without those ads, the cost of the yearbooks would have been much more. I was working for minimum wage in high school at $1.65 an hour. Yearbooks were around $15. So it made a difference for sure. Especially when you figure an average work week after school was probably ten to fifteen hours. If I remember right, for work experience credit it was limited to ten hours.

Do High Schools even print/sell yearbooks (we called them 'Annuals' in my day)??   I haven't seen a current one in ages... maybe I should ask my grandchildren?  :)

I DO remember spending much time in HS soliciting 'paid ads' for the school newspaper and Annual/yearbooks.

I went to a smaller (110 in my grad class) county school, and they were exceptionally poor in those days... we had to solicit funds via contributions and ad sales for nearly everything extra-curricular that we did in those days!  And we solicited essentially all commercial businesses, not just car dealers; including restaurants, clothing stores, you name it...

PS.  In my first paid job (between HS and college), I started at $25/week for a 48 hr/week job, and the only year I was able to buy an annual was for my senior year.

I know my daughter had one at the end of 2011. And I remember them as Annuals as well.

This must be a very early 67 as the mag caps appear to be '66 style.
