Title: BB oil pan that fits Camaro AND bolt on windage tray and studs?
Post by: JESSE TACKETT on February 18, 2020, 03:45:51 PM
So, can anyone help me understand which bb oil pan I need (original or aftermarket) to be able to use the factory bolt on windage tray (and mounting studs) in a Camaro chassis? Did the 375hp 396s not all come so equipped?  TIA, jess T

Did the 396-375 come equipped with a windage tray? No.

OK, so no 396 windage tray? How about 427 in the COPO Camaros. Did they have them? If they did, what oil pan did they use? How would one identify it, and is it being reproduced? TIA,  jt

ZL1 engines configured for Corvette [5 qt. pan] were built with a windage tray. I don't believe it will clear a 4 qt. pan.

Again, copo 427? No
William answered your question above, but unless you have messed with a lot of GM parts, you may not have understood? So I clarified that no big block Camaro came with a windage tray. I don’t know of any aftermarket pans that would work (not saying there aren’t any)as most aftermarket are designed to use windage devices the pan manufacturer makes, so they are compatible together.

Legend has it that Tonawanda left the windage tray on ZL1 engines configured for Camaros. They chiseled out the standard baffling in the 4 qt. pan for clearance.

OK, thanks, I understand now. I mistakenly assumed all HP big block chevys got the "bolt to the main studs" windage tray.   jess
