Title: Whats the difference?
Post by: 68 mo on January 28, 2020, 10:05:45 PM
Ecklers has their "Best" front fenders priced at $299
they also have "Good" front fenders for $156
Questions I have are, what is the difference and
do any of you guy have first hand experience using these parts?

I don’t know the answer. You could give them a call.

Vendor pricing sets an expectation that the more you pay, the better the part. My expectation would be the more expensive item should be better stamped, fit better and be of heavier gauge than the cheaper one. That may or may not apply here.
But for the 'best' price, I'd strongly suggest you'd be better off looking for nice used GM originals; you know they'll fit as good as they did on original cars, and you'll be keeping your car GM as far as possible.

Pretty sure the Eckler's $299 fenders are AMD's, which are GM Restoration parts. Pull up the AMD site and you can get a good understanding of what they're made of. I agree with the thought "you get what you pay for", and OE is always preferable. But there are good alternatives to $2000.00 OE/GM NOS fenders -

I prefer GM assembly line sheetmetal even if they require rust repair. If one does this every day, it will be found that repro, and even many NOS parts require labor to achieve alignment goals. If you want show gaps, you'll still have to modify assembly line tin.

X2 on assembly line sheetmetal.

The reproduction fenders do not have the same characteristics in the stampings on the parts in the engine compartment.
The differences are mainly cosmetic however ONE bracket specifically (fender to front of firewall) which arches over to the top of the firewall does not have enough clearance, the fender drop is correct but the spot welded reinforcement was not tight to the fender drop.
