Yes possibly a mold number. Has no important meaning.

Perhaps no important meaning to 'us' (fifty years later), but I'm also certain it had some important meaning to someone during the design/manufacturing phases...  :)    otherwise it would not be there.

I'm trying to understand when this case was cast. Does anyone know where the casting dates are on a late 68 muncie case? I have read what I could find online but I don't see the two circles that are divided into two halves that is called the date marker.

Go to the main forum page to drive train decode it will show you a picture. If it is the original it will be at the back of the main case going up the passenger side. Should have a date code and partial vin of your car. Hope this helps.

That stamped date would be the *assembly date* for the transmission, not the *cast date*...
.. but generally speaking, I don't think the cast date would not be very far in advance of the assembly date...

I am familiar with my assembly date and vin stamps. I can see them clearly. My question is where do you find the cast date? All I see is the 163 number with two dots on the side.( see picture ) What am I missing? I have a feeling this is the cast date information but I can't find reference information on how to decipher. If someone has a a picture or knowledge of where the cast date is please post a picture if possible. My car is 68 L78.

The 13 is a mold number. The 2 split circles seemed hit and miss and were used up through 68 model years. Likely the second large number is a month with the dots indicating the week. I have seen one case like this in Paul Cangialosi's book page 21. The second large number castings seemed to only last a short while. The casting dates later changed to a grid style around 1971 or so.

I believe it was casted in May, so your car's build date is probably July.
