Title: 68 RS grill silver
Post by: BillOhio on June 01, 2019, 01:50:19 PM
I am looking for some feedback, I have an nos RS grill and it is the later all black bar one.  My car is a 10D car and from the report here, it should be one with the silver bars. Has anyone here taken a black grill and painted the silver on it??  The car has pretty much all gm parts with it and hate to put the repop grill on but might if this will not look right

I've used the argent silver on a 69 grill and it turned out great.

Bill, My 68 (12D) had a front end wreck repair back in 1980 & they replaced the grill and upon my ownership and restoration I chose to use the Silver paint pen method of accenting the horz bars. Now I assume the orig grills use some form of Vacuum metalizing (layer of metal on a substrate) Also referred to as “vacuum deposition" but how can you DIY or justify the expense so  I rationalized the DIY paint pen method as 'good enough'. Besides, If you drive the thing it is only a matter of time your grill should be covered in BUGS! I would also argue that the use of a CHROME tape that can peel off and almost look to shiny  as oppose to the pen almost replicating the aged thin lackluster original finish. I think I have seen NOS 68 doors and the silver is not shiny and clear enough to pick your teeth in the reflection if you get my drift.

I did run across the chrome tape kit and that sounded like a nightmare to put on. The pen might be easier and easy to touch up. What kind of pen did you use?  Wonder what a sharpie would do....

sanford uni-paint paint pen silver chrome
I would avoid products designed for use on paper. I think the sharpie version would not deposit a very rubust coating.
