Title: 1967 Camaro Z28 show car
Post by: bcmiller on May 11, 2019, 01:03:05 AM
Scott posted this picture in the Californian thread, but I see a 1967 Z28 show car in the lower left background. This is at the New York International Auto Show. Check the Z-28 license plate.

What else do we know about THAT car?  Scott?  Jon?

I think this is a very early build but I will let Jon Mello tell us more about this Z28.

1st picture: Californian, Z28 and Cherokee: The metadata for this image states, “1967 New York Auto Show UNITED STATES - APRIL 05: 1967 New York Auto Show. A variety of Chevrolet Camaro's on display at the New York Auto Show. (Photo by Bob D'Olivo/The Enthusiast Network/Getty Images)” https://www.gettyimages.com/license/163091838

2nd picture: cropped version of the 1st

3rd picture: Rear of Z28: While I’m not positive, this picture was most likely taken at the Auto Show in New York because the color of the car is the same, the license plate matches the above picture, and the car is sitting on a floor/ramp that looks to be the same as in the above photos. I don't have a whole lot of information on the car but I know it's in the group of the first 16 Z-28s built and was built on December 30th, 1966 so it would be on a 4P body.  I have never seen a picture of the car in its entirety.  I hope there are some out there somewhere.

What a home run lineup of show cars.  I love all three.

Is it white or BY?

Would the White nose stripe on the Cherokee be a good contrast for color determination and comparison?

Wasn’t the plan originally that the 1967 Z28 would only be available in a certain color or limited colors?

Or am I not remembering correctly?

I don't remember reading that. But if so, it would seem that Capri Cream would be a preferred color. The prototype Z was the same color. So it seems that someone with influence liked it.

There were magazine articles back in the '70s or early '80s that stated the '67 Zs only came in Capri Cream. That was obviously an assumption on somebody's part but people have taken it as gospel. The 1967 Z-28s were available in all the available colors right from the start of production and there have even been a few found in special order paint colors.

Thanks for clarifying that Jon. I was thinking it was an article written before Z28 production started, but obviously that was not the case.

Correction, they made the claim that Capri Cream was the only available color as far back as the April '67 issue of Speed & Supercar magazine, as seen in the following link... http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=12279.0

Capri Cream was not a preferred color.  Vince Piggins asked his boss for a car to use to make a prototype of a Trans-Am eligible Camaro and they gave him an already built car from the Proving Ground motor pool. It was probably outfitted the closest to what he was requesting and happened to be cream.

I bought a Sierra Fawn '67 RS from the original owner back in 1988.  It was the first 1st gen Camaro I've owned.  I sold it in 1994.  I didn't realize at the time how rare that color was.  I often wish I kept it.

Just found a professionally produced color film of spectators being interviewed at the 1967 Chicago Auto Show and in the background you can see what has to be the same 1967 Camaro Z28.  It has the same "Z-28" rear license plate and rear spoiler.  Unfortunately you can't see if it is wearing the same aftermarket wheels.

Tell me what you guys think but I believe the color film shows that the car was painted white.  Notice the difference in the color of the Z28 compared to the tan collar on the jacket of the interviewee.

This event took place Saturday, February 25th through Sunday, March 5th, 1967 at The International Amphitheater in Chicago, Illinois, more than a month earlier than the New York International Auto Show.

See it at 01:53:06 here: http://www.historicfilms.com/search/?q=1967+chicago+auto+show#p1t6010i0o823

I think this confirms that the non-RS Camaro behind the guy standing between the two convertible "Dream Cars" in the 3rd and 4th pictures is the Z28.  This was also taken at the 1967 Chicago Auto Show.

These color photos from 1967 International Automobile Show in New York and this clipping from the March 31, 1967 Daily News newspaper article about the show confirms the color white for the Z28 show car.
