I have been going through my storage containers to organize the parts I have acquired over the last 35 years and just found a 1969 Z-28 block which has a stamp pad showing VO927DZ and the partial VIN # on the oil filter flange shows 9L5034 and I can't make out any other numbers, so my question is based on the build date of the VIN wouldn't this be a Sept. 27Th 1968 built engine and if so wouldn't the partial VIN be on the engine pad? As I am cleaning out these containers I will post the orphan blocks and transmissions.

For that time frame I have seen them down by the oil filter. It seems it was not consistent though. Can you post some pics?

From the DRIVETRAIN DECODING (http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#PartialVINs) page:
In the 1969 model year, the partial VIN for V8 engines was stamped in either of two locations: on the engine pad or near the oil filter. The alternator was moved to the passenger side in 1969 which covered the engine stamp pad and caused the VIN stamp to be relocated by the oil filter. The block in this area is raw unmachined casting which makes this stamp difficult to see. Generally, the Norwood plant stamped the VIN on the engine pad on early cars and moved the stamp by the oil filter in the December 68 timeframe (there are a few known exceptions). Los Angeles was not as consistent and the VIN stamp location varied during the year.

I know of a very original 09D LOS Z, 9L502xxx, engine assembly date Sept 13, with partial down by the oil filter. Has the PoP, invoice etc.
If possible, please post of picture of the pad stamp and partial VIN on your block. Thanks!

I just got back from Barrett-Jackson today or I would have posted these sooner and I found another Los block which I will post when I have a chance. Curt

Hi, can you read what the VIN number is on on the 0303DZ block? I have a LOS Z/28 with a 3/17 build date.
-
I will check it out again and let you know but it is very hard to read on that block.

Your storage containers are way cooler than mine!
-
My 09D of 1968 1969 Van Nuys assembled Z28 has its originally assembled V0913DZ block with the vin number located by the oil filter.
-
My LA built 12B Z has the VIN stamped on the pad.
-
LOS 09D L-78 by oil filter, L502919.

A word of warning! regarding my storage containers, I used 48' trailers to store eight cars and numerous parts and thought it was a great idea to use them until I could eventually build my new garage, well that was approximately seven years ago and when I finally transferred the cars I found pretty bad oxidation from moisture that formed in these containers through condensation which forms on the ceilings of these things due to no ventilation. So I have cars that were show winners at one time with rust in the engine compartments, etc. there a mess! I learned the hard way and do NOT recommend any long term storage in those containers. P.S. I live in New Mexico where the climate is very dry and it made no difference condensation will happen when there is no vents, just like a building.

Understand, I have a Buddie in the PNW who did the same, except here (PNW) Rain & Time,,, they (Containers) puddle & rust thru the roof ruining the "tons" of used (parted cars) and nos parts inside,
Shame, he stored 'Ikea' furniture in the dry garage and lost the battle of the elements to the GM parts horde in the sealand containers, & I mean CONTAINERS full, PIC to come someday, if he lets me snap a few shots
Lesson well stated above.
Sorry about hat,
Jim

I have a friend with shorter container (about)18'. He cut out a hole in the top and installed a roof vent with spinning top. seems like it did the trick.

Try Evaporust or similar, with a small pump, a hose showerhead, and a kiddie pool.
Just keep circulating the liquid til it's clean. There's some good pics of this out there.

Seems like once you seal them up the rust comes. I have wheels, parts, etc. under a roof off the back of my shop in NC. A lot of dust but little rust. Also little security.
