Title: Original cowl tag??? or not??
Post by: 69Z28-RS on January 03, 2019, 05:37:41 PM
Attention cowl tag experts:   Just curious if this cowl tag (and color/trim combo) is legitimate? or a made up fake tag??

It's real, been known for years. Not a high-quality resto.

Gary do you have a link to that car?

Yes, here is a link to the car  (VOLO Museum sales link)

https://www.volocars.com/auto-sales/vehicles/14744/1969-chevrolet-camaro

My curiousity was if this was a legitimate tag, ie.   did GM actually build a car with this combination (not in how well this car is restored/built/etc)..   A friend was interested in another car there, and when I saw that combination it was a new one to me!  and I'm not a cowl tag expert..  :)

here is a pic of the trans for this car. Can someone explain the other stamp below the VIN stamp. I am not sure this is the original trans as stated. Looks to be from January of 69. So pretty early for this car ( sent an email of the pic to Gary, since I haven't figured out how to resize yet with my new computer)

It appears to be another VIN. Trans is Jan 29 M21

The letter Z on the other VIN on the trans is for the Fremont plant in California which built Chevelles and El Caminos. I guess we can determine it is a Camaro VIN restamp and the trans build date is a bit early for that late build of Camaro.

Off topic, most annoying seeing crossmembers in backwards.

The other VIN on the trans is for a March built 69 Chevelle at the Fremont CA assembly plant. So the Chevelle VIN might be the original one.

Sorry Warren I did not look at your reply before I posted.

still no comments from the 'cowl tag experts' in the crowd?

As it turns out, I got to see this car in person this weekend since I went with my friend who was interested in a '55 Nomad they had, and we ended up doing a trade for the Nomad and brought it home and tucked it into his garage this afternoon!

I'm still curious about the cowl tag and this color/trim combination if it's 'legitimate' (did the factory build them like this and iS this tag a good one?); I took a few photos of the car, but it wasn't really of interest to me (I saw some other incorrect items when I viewed it), but I have NO idea on this tag and hope someone will comment on it.  VOLO *thinks* it's a correct tag and that the car is 'restored', BUT.. They have between 350-400 cars in their 'inventory' and on display inside.   The facility is great for what they do (mostly represent others cars for them, and in the meantime sell admittances to their 'museum', which is in actuality a large indoor 'buy/sell/trade' special interest auto facility.   THey also have a lot of other interesting things there, as well as the owner's collection of real "Classic' cars (Deusenbergs, RR's, etc) on display (Not for sale).. a restaurant on premises, a military display, etc...  I have intentionally stayed away from the Chicago area for a long long time, but if you are close or visiting the area and have a half day to day to spare, I think you will enjoy the visit.   It's about an hour NW of Chicago in a nice suburb called 'Volo'.

William stated above its real, and a known car. The rear end on the car is suspect as well.

Sorry William!   I don't know how I missed your response earlier..   #2!

Yes, the restoration is NOT a high quality one, but the color combo is very striking!   I noticed several *issues* in a quick walk around of the car.   Does anyone have any idea as to how many cars (Z28 in particular) that were built in that combo?

In the listing it says "Claimed to be only 3 made like this one" , when you were at the dealership did you ask who claimed that? ;D

No, I didn't.   We were there to sell a '55 sedan delivery (custom) and purchase a restored '55 Nomad (older restoration but great condition).   I did a walk around of the car, viewed a few 'screw ups' in the restoration, examined the tag, which looked OK to me (but I'm NOT a cowl tag expert).  I was only curious if the color combo was an original one since I'd never first hand viewed a car like that.  If there was 'one' made in that color, then it's no problem for me to believe that 3 (or only 3) were made in that combo.   I like the combo but it's one that not a lot of people would like.

The air cleaner was missing the extension ring - made me wonder if the cowl induction was original to the car, but I didn't even check the hood for a date stamp which I should have done.

I was tired and wanted to get the Nomad back home!  On Friday, I drove 200 miles to my friend's home in TN, then we drove another 400 miles before we stopped in Indianapolis for the night.  Got up early Saturday and drove another 250 or so to get to Volo before they opened.  Spent 4-5 hrs there making the deal and taking a quick tour of the cars/facility there, then headed home, driving another 420 miles before we stopped in Lexington KY for the night.  Then Sunday we drove another 230 miles to his home to unload the car get it in the garage and then have lunch (and some Mayfield Orange-pineapple ice cream!), before my wife and I drove the 200 miles back home.  So for me, it was 600 miles Friday, almost 700 on Saturday, and 430 on Sunday, most of it pulling a trailer with car...   It was a tiring but interesting weekend... :)

Jim,

I'm almost *always* ready for a car-related road trip, especially when Camaros or Nomads are involved!  :)...  but I have to say, at my age now (70, and my friend is 72), it's much tougher than it was 40, 30, 20, or even 10 yrs ago! :)

PS.  The Volo museum/sales facility had several early Camaros including '69 Z28 (2), '68 Z28 which looked like a nice car, and several other SS and retromod Camaros, including a '69 ZL1 (tribute) car.  Most of their cars there are consignment cars, and there is a large turnover as they sell/buy/trade; probably 10 deals while we were there (a beautiful Saturday weatherwise for north of Chicago!), and we were told it was sometimes much more hectic!
