Title: 1968 Z28 water pump bypass fitting
Post by: z28z11 on August 25, 2018, 07:29:11 PM
I've searched the threads and never found a "definitive" answer - is the hex style fitting or the square style proper for a June '68 Z28 326 water pump bypass hose fitting ? I have a 1/2" NPT GM NOS square style fitting, but afraid it was released as a replacement or maybe was used on L79 motors prior to '67-'68 MO applications. Opinions ?

Regards,
Steve

Hex
X2 on hex but limited originals observed but believe that to be what is considered technically correct. Here is an original with stampings.

Here's what threw me - correct part number in my early 70's part book, 3829819, NOS, but apparently superseded the hex with the square. Disappointing due to a good looking part !

Thanks for the replies and the confirmation -

Steve

I found one.. It's a little tired. Is this correct? Has different markings, but maybe a different vendor?  Danny

Sort of 'off topic' but sort of not..  What really does a bypass fitting do other than bypass coolant directly to the intake and avoid the heater core hoses and circuit?
Do they really serve great and needed purpose(s) for engines and if so why were they not installed on all engines and not just the HiPerf versions like the Z's and L78's? Was there something to do with the higher rpm's that these engines were capable of that make their installation a necessity verses regular lower rpm versions.. there should be some logical reason I'm not aware of?
I do know GM made many other good performance engines that rev'd up well that didn't seem to need such an arrangement so..?

Looks like it to me. The two (or more) vendors for any particular part is perfectly plausible - we've noted that fact on many other parts.

This one appears to have been painted at one point in time - wonder if that was original ? By the looks of the hose end, it was in service for a long time - you don't get pitting like that on a plated steel part in a couple of month's exposure.

Steve

That coupling, hose and clamps were on z/28 engine when painted.

Here is yet another one, making it (3) different markings. I also have two NOS ones with no markings at all.

Mine has what appears to be "CP" within the diamonds and a circle around the diamond.

Z28Z11, you still need one of these? Maybe might be better to start off with a fresh new one. Unless your car is ALL numbers matching/survivor. Then you surely don't want a new one  ;D  Danny

Steve, z28z11... I purchased this bypass fitting 3 or 4 years ago for $35 from Steve Pardini at Steve's Camaro's in San Bruno, CA. I thought that was a good deal. I never had bought one before. It was just sitting on his desk and he sold it to me. Wish I had another for our other fellow member needing one. It's a little pitted as mentioned, but will hold up when installed. AND it's original!! I have it packed and ready to ship out. My gift to you. PM me your mailing info and I'll send it out to ya  ;)  Cheers ... Danny

is that plated brass? or steel with yellow/gold primer?

Steel with a zinc dichromate top coat, unless I guess wrong. Look at the pic of my superseded part for the likely finish spec before painting - GM probably didn't care if the bar stock for making the body was hex or square, just dimensions and finish per print spec.

Steve

Danny,

The fitting arrived today - many thanks in your direction. You gotta love OE parts - reproductions pale by comparison.

Keep an eye peeled for something I can help with - there has to be something I can source for you. I very much appreciate your generosity, but I would like to return the favor, too.

Regards,
Steve
