I wonder why the seller believes it's a '68? or maybe a typo when he entered the ad??

Hold on to those pics, I'm sure we will see this drivetrain at Barrett-Jackson in a few years in a "all numbers matching original Z28"...

"68 VIN with '69 Suffix.... Transmission VIN derivative stamp does not match...  Seems like it might just be a bunch of parts.

The ONLY place i see anything related to '68 model year' is the Seller's own statement that it's a '68 drivetrain (and his 'assumption' of the VIN prefix)..  ALL of the parts photographs would indicate '69 parts, and what I can read are consistent...??   but maybe I'm missing something ??

???

All of the components were in a car lost in a fire (a 68 from the description). They were orphans - probably from a wrecked car. The 68 caught fire and now these parts live to be put into yet another car. Personally I would steer clear from them. Bad juju.

Unfortunately I just saw this post. I have owned the original car for about 10 years. It wasn’t a wrecked vehicle and still retains all of it’s original sheet metal. I purchased the car with a supercharged 468 BB and an M21 trans. The car and this drivetrain were about 200 miles apart from each other. I’m sure the person that purchased the drivetrain would want more than I paid for the car for it! That’s how it usually works. Thanks for starting this post hopefully I can get in touch with the purchaser and work something out.

On the fortunate side, you found this site, someone was thoughtful enough to post the info, the drive train still exists, the eBay ad still comes up when you click the above link, you can get a hold of the seller by that info...sounds like your “luck” is changing? Welcome aboard!
I am curious about the 68 this engine came out of? Back in the 80s, one of my buddies put a whole drivetrain from a 69 Z in a Rally Green 68 RS. He was/is in N. Ky. Doubtful the car he got the drivetrain out of and drivetrain itself, both, found their way to Missouri?

True as to the luck changing! I have been in contact with the seller and have gotten the purchasers contact info. The car actually came from right on the Indiana/Illinois border. How they got separated and that far apart will probably remain a mystery. When I purchased the car the owner had no idea where the drivetrain was. The seller of the drivetrain said he had tried for quite some time searching the Vin to find the car before listing it for sale. With today’s privacy laws he obviously wasn’t successful. Thank you for taking the time to create the original Post. Without that it would still be lost

Have you had any success negotiating with the person who bought the drive line from Matt? I was the under-bidder on that auction and wondered if the car was still out there. Dates line up perfectly with my car and as near as we could figure the cars went off the line within a day of each other.

I hope you are able to re-connect the drive line and the car.

I have had a conversation with the winner of the auction. The engine has already been sent to the Machine shop and he claims to already have an additional $5,000 investment in it. We have discussed trading blocks if I can locate another with a similar build date. My car is an 05A build and his is an 05E
build. So actually the engine is dated a few weeks to early for his car if you look at the timing of the engine build vs. car build of mine. I have a number of blocks but unfortunately nothing close to the date in either an 010 or 6618 casting. Thanks for the continued interest and I will keep you updated of any progress

I am kinda surprised he wouldn't just state a price. Making a trade is more tricky IMO. Hopefully the 5k he has in it, would have been similar to what you would have done with it. Keep the dialog open. if there are other parts he is looking for, try locating them on ebay, and equating a dollar amount for them. You pay him the money and he can make the purchases, and get what he wants. Or there are many DZ blocks on ebay, find a date that works for him and he can go purchase a date correct block. Just a suggestion to make things go smoother.
This way if you pay him and there is an issue with what he purchases, it is between him and the seller. While just your block will be between him and you.

(Speaking of Indiana, just make sure you never deal with a seller out of Angola Indiana..."re-stamp city " with that guy

Another $5000 investment in it?  Doubtful. I think he just wants to get as much as he can, since he has what you need.

Well 5k seems over the top for machine work, but no need to squabble over that. I think arriving at fair price would be the objective. Plus you have to factor your getting the trans as well, right?
Also I assume your trying to get the water pump, distributor, valve covers and any other correct accessories that he got with the package? Hopefully you have your original rear already?

Auction end was $8402.01 - so another $5000 pushes that up probably to the point it only makes sense to pay that much if you have the matching car.

I sincerely hope a deal can be made to reunite these parts with the car.

I can’t figure where an additional 5K came from either. He claims he’s not ATTACHED to it and he’d be willing to do something with another block. Yes, the goal is to get the drivetrain back with the car. I’m still looking for another block to get the job done. Thanks for your shared interest and concern! I’ll keep you posted.
